I just bought a 1996 LHD Fiat Ducato Toskana 50 campervan imported to Ireland in 2005. its in very good condition with the 1.9TD 82hp engine, the temp goes up to approx 70 max on gauge and drops if cruising to nearly 50 again (on a cold day mind you and motorway), I presume the Thermostat is shot, but I am not sure. I have ordered a thermostat and Ill change it anyway!! had experience of not changing thermostat in the past and dont want to boil another head.:bang:

Has anyone any advice please on what I should be looking at , I am going to change the coolant etc once I get the thermostat!! :)
It would be much appreciated and I'll donate €1 for every reply up to a max of €10 to the forum.
thanks:slayer:;)

Hi again :)

Diesels run cool.. you cant change that.. ;)

Ok testing:

Fire it up.. let it idle for a couple of minutes.. then compare temps of the coolant hoses..
ONE SHOULD BE COOL the others getting warm

All at warm.. means the 'stat is not holding the HOT in the motor

Ive not owned your set.up but suspect the stat is at g.box end of motor.. well away from moving parts

Changing stats is often easier with battery tray removed ;)

that era of ducato 94----98 often have a common feature and that is a faulty temperature gauge its a fault which develops over a period of time my 96 2.5 never appears to get hot the gauge only shows real temperature rise in the Alpes etc when working really hard.. motorway cruising 65--70 mph never gets above 30--40 degrees c so I wouldn't worry to much.

Would suggest getting it checked using a infra red scanner or the like to establish whether it is cool or not.

Hi Olan

If the thermostat is doing its job, the temperature will remain more or less static once warmed up. Even if the gauge is faulty it should still show a more or less steady reading (modern gauges are rock steady, but that's just the intervention of nanny software). A temperature that goes up and down like a yo-yo as the speed and load changes is a classic sign of a thermostat that is stuck open or partly open. This is most noticeable if you climb a long hill and then lift off as you descend the other side. The blast of cooling air with water still circulating through the radiator will over cool the engine, which isn't producing anything like as much heat downhill.

thanks everyone I really appreciate the advice and have the old thermosat out now and fitting anew one. So does anyone have the THERMOSTAT torque settings for the 1.9 td engine in a 1996 DUCATO please, Id really appreciate them before I bolt it back on!!

regards Olan

Olan,

I do not have a figure for your engine, but for the later 2.0JTD engine 20Nm is specified. I think that this is for M8 bolts, as my own look up card shows 25Nm for M8 bolts.

When I started working on my vehicles many years ago, a torque wrench was considered essential for cylinder head bolts and big end caps, but not much else. My original Britool 1/2" torque wrench from that time stops at 20 lbft which is more that 25Nm!

Hi All,

All done since Saturday the 6th and did 300 kms approx around Cork county and had no issues except for a loose water clip that needed to be replaced. Temp stayed stable but never got beyond 90 at any stage- still have to replace the temp control switch on the thermostat when it arrives. Used torque specs as recommended for steel into Aluminium and no issues. I am on the look out now for the point of a leak in the camper in the underbody i think it's the shower plughole is not secure or water tight and letting water drip onto chassis really confusing me. I also have to sort out rear wheel bearing as one is defo gone , need to take off measure and order from coastal motorhomes as they seem to have the most comprehensive range of parts for my van.

Thanks talk soon

Olan.
