Technical camshaft adjustment 2.0 petrol

Hello, and thanks to all that gave me information about my stuck pulley. The old girl is now up and running with her new cam belt. I wonder if anyone would know the cam settings and whether they are adjusted by shims or some other method. Also, Is it possible to do without removing the head?
The van runs fine but the cam,sounds like a sewing machine.

Inlet o.15mm to 0.25mm, Exhaust 0.35mm to 0.45mm. (1.0mm ~ 0.040")

Adjustment by selecting shims.

I always thought that comparing an engine to a sewing machine was a token of praise.
