I am deaf my grammar is not very good I hope you understand my words.
My Ducato 240 has been in accident now is in the repair shop for 4 weeks. So I hired a rent van to cover my courier for further 3 more weeks. It is a Ducato 250 long wheelbase 2010 with Iveco 2.3 120bhp I don't know if this is a normal because the engine speed is max rpm at 3,400rpm as I try go up the hill (30% steep in Wales) in second gear it stop at 3,400rpm, I had to revs more because the van is actually 3.7tons plus with about 500kg worth of loading or otherwise I would have lose the speed and start all over again. This is how I found the issue with rpm.

My mate thinks it should be max 4,500 or 5,000rpm? is anyone have Ducato that are limit at 3,400rpm? I was not sure if the rent company restrict engine speed rpm? thanks

In my experience rental companies do do this. I saw one fitted to a VW once, and it was a sealed, screw in platic thing that stopped the throttle cable going to max travel. Didn't stop the driver breaking it off!

@3500rpm is pretty high on the Rev range, by the sounds of it you’re probably and likely way overweight so will struggle up hills

At 3.7tonnes your overweight and illegal,

3.5tonne is your max and will struggle up hills

3.5T (van, driver, fuel, ply lining, anything else fitted or carried plus load, must total up to 3.5T)

Overweight? Why did I have a label on the passenger side door said the van unladen is 3.7tons with loading max of 855kg goods. The rental mislead?

I have been thinking along the same lines.

The maximum torque of the 2.3 JTD engine is developed at 1800 rpm.

To the best of my knowledge, the overall drive ratio in 6th gear is similar to 5th on an x244 2.8 JTD, on which 70 mph equates to under 3000 (2968?) rpm, even when fitted with the low ratio 5th gear, which is not common.

To find the MAM (Maximum Allowable Mass), look at the VIN plate under the bonnet.

If it's a maxi van on the heavy chassis, it could be plated up to 4250kg MGW. Unlikley though, as hire companies tend to stay with 3500kgs as anything over that restricts customers due to driving licence issues.

But maximum power on all the multijet engines is between 3500-3600 rpm I believe depending on versions, and maximum torque has already started tailing off by that stage, so in reality there would be absolutely nothing to be gained by going over 3500 rpm or so.

Its well before that for the 120

All Ducato are 3500Gross (everything and everyone in the van) max weight)

They do make a 4005 GVW which will have a tachograph and maybe restricted

Your 3.7 plus 855kg doesn’t add up

First thing to do is look at the chassis plate I’ve attached an image from google showing max GVW 3500kg and the front and rear gross axel weights,

I would assume if yours is somehow @4.6tonnes
The chassis plate will show this

And there will be a tachograph fitted,

And with 4.6 tonne I’d be surprised if it went up a 10% hill

My L4H2 130bhp maxi with me on board (21 stone) a full tank (81kg) ply lining, spare wheel, side protection bars, and all the junk I carry, weighs in at 2360kg allowing me 1140kg max load (worked out from a weighbridge) but I rarely go over 1tonne

Your max 855kg doesn’t add upIMG_5965.JPGIMG_5964.JPG

My only other thoughts are
Yours isn’t an L4 but an L3 which is a “3.7Meter Load bay length” not 3.7 tonnes which if is still a 3500kg GVW will give you around 1500kg max payload (including driver/passenger fuel, junk etc etc)

L4 being 1440kg inc driver/passengers fuel etc etc

The chassis plate will tell you what it can take

Hire companies and their staff generally don’t know a medium wheel base from an extra long wheelbase
Let alone the weight legalities,

It’s up to the driver to know all that, you

Could be up to 4250kgs MGW, but as I say unlikely for a rental van.

Yup, but still doesn’t add up 3.7T plus 855kg

A hire company buys as far as I’m aware the basic spec long or extra long 3.5T vans

The OP needs to check the chassis plate, would be cool if he’d share the info off it

So we can help [emoji1303]

Not 100% but back in 2014 oldest lost I can see 4005kg was the largest payload listed on the 40 range, with tachograph

New ones list 40/4250,

Further to my confabulations is a hire company hiring out a 2010 Euro4 van ??*♂️??*♂️

And a courier driving an older Varient Ducato

Not cost effective should he need to go into London,
As we do regularly

The page I attached was from a 2015 manual, so X290 (facelift) vans. Maybe that's when it changed.

But don't disagree with anything you've said (y)

There are some fairly dubious hire companies around though. I dealt with an accident only a few years ago, involving a 2008 Transit van hired from a local "cheap van rental" company. The driver lost control when he had to brake sharply. When examined, the front offside brake disc had been removed from the hub and a block of wood wedged into the caliper. It had been hired out in that condition. Probably goes without saying that the hire company are no longer in business!

I had a power steering failure yesterday! today I went back to the rent dealer to solved the warning light, plus I have mentioned them about the weight label on the passenger side and I have told him that all you the Fiatforum said this is 3500kg van, the dealer man said I don't know why the label is stick inside the side door and I have show the Vin number 3500kg he said I did not know that the van is weights 3.5 tons!

Anyway the dealer man rev the engine stops at 3,400rpm he said it should be at 4,500 rpm not 3,400 rpm dealer reckon there is something wrong with Ducato.

I got a new van is Peugeot Boxer 335 L2 H2 2.0 BlueHDi 130ps

Sorry I have waste my time to asked for a help I wish they did not give me the Ducato in the first place!
