Hi, the cruise control became intermittent then packed in on my 2001 X230 2.8 JTD LAIKA motorhome. I checked the error codes using the Multieuscan and found a P0500-Vehicle speed signal error. I assume this is a fault with the vehicle speed sensor or wiring to/from.Also the speedo needle oscillates slightly. Does anyone know where the sensor is located? Pictures or diagrams will help immensely.

I may be wrong but I believe it is located on the gearbox final drive along side one of the drive shafts .

Thanks rayc, I had already looked at that post you attached the link for, not sure if is the same, cos they where talking about the 2.0ltr not the 2.8.

Hi,, I believe on the top of the gearbox (or maybe the back face) some folk remove it to fill the oil up, but there is a danger of a gear dropping into the box, I think top is most likely. That is the case on an 05, which I have, looking in the elearn manual downloaded from here, there is a line drawing showing it on the back face, just above the bolt on crossmember.Confusingly there's another showing it on the top, slightly to the rear and to the right of the reverse switch! It looks like it depends on the year, early ones maybe on the back.
Only one way to find out for sure- get underneath and get dirty....! It does sound like there is a dirty or loose contact at work with fluctuation.

It's easy enough to access from behind underneath. Held in by 8mm bolt as far as I remember. Careful removing it as the pinion can drop into the gearbox. If speedo is jumping you probably have a bad cable which in turn can damage the pinion. Sender itself may be fine.

Couldn't find exzact picture, white sender in the foreground is the location on the later model with digital speedo. Yours is in exactly the same position but also has speedo cable coming out of it as in second picture. The second picture also has tacho cable behind speedo cable ignore that.
