Afternoon

keep getting the fault code PO401-61 intermittent High Pressure EGR Blocked it doesn't throw up the EML on the dash but i know when its done it poor performance poor fuel economy and rough idle at start up when cold

Clear the fault its all good until it happens again which can be straight away or a few days after

Vehicle is a 2017 Ducato 2.3 euro6 130 90% of driving is long motorway trips very little city driving and no stop start driving and only BP/Shell fuel used

any pointers before i throw £500 at it for a new EGR Valve

Regards Paul

Just a thought my ducato was affected with egr valve recall and was used with the pipe cracked for 3-4 months as Fiat was unable to get the parts and they ok'd it for me to continue using it would this have had a knock on affecting the galleries in the egr valve circuit

Thanks whine0 for the help got it booked in for the software
Update next week they are doing an outstanding recall at the
same time

I will update if it’s a success

Well no joy with Fiat informed me there is no software update they wanted to strip the egr valve down to investigate but at £90 per hour labour i refused

Well took it back to a different Fiat dealer with all the info whine0 supplied came back with the news yes it needed the software update but because of the possible damage to the DPF EGR cooler Turbo and Soot filled intercooler as well as injectors 1 & 3 reading high on leak of test they have opened a technical case with Fiat and a possible repair bill of 6-8k as its out of warranty
Well that isn't going to happen insisted they do a forced regen on the DPF and install the update but they made sign a disclaimer as it deviated from service bulletin as they wanted to keep my Ducato for further investigation That was not an option as its needed to work

This error code PO401-61 doesn't trigger the EML but dose shut down DPF reg and the EGR cooler and goes undetected as its intermittent its possible this is damaging the DPF,EGR cooler and Turbo so my advice is if you have the EURO 6 Ducato get it checked to see if it needs this software update quoting service news document 10.023.19 for Ducato 290 and 295 service news release date 04/11/2019

symptoms i noticed are very gradual lost of power/boost sluggish and fuel economy erratic then starts with a smokey start up from cold and very lumpy tick over and harsh throttle response in traffic this is when i scanned it with multiscan cleared the fault and all symptoms have gone until it happens again which can be a week or straight away

after the update was installed i noticed a big difference engine sounded better loads more power lower down better fuel economy it coasts for ever now rather than having like engine braking on all the time off throttle and driving in traffic is so much smoother not harsh like on off the throttle as was before

Fingers crossed it all works out for me as theirs noway i can afford a massive repair bill only thing i will be doing is getting the injectors refurbed as i have a friend who owns a diesel injector repair business fully accredited by Bosch and Delphi and possibly get the DPF cleaned but unsure which system/company to use for this

Quick update

after few days and 2k miles driving EML came on luckily i had the laptop with me scanned it and got the PO401-61 code again cleared it been ok since looks like the new update triggers the EML light
I bought some Holts DPF cleaner chucked that in a 3rd of a tank then 4th gear all the way home from Bristol the Lancashire on cruise control keeping revs high so passive regeneration could be done many times
not had a problem since now getting 30mpg average just done another oil and filter change as soot contamination in 5k mile oil was high no signs of soot on exhaust tip as before just got to get the injectors refurbed and i'm going to take the EGR cooler of and clean that out to be sure as there a fine filter in there

Don't suppose you have looked at getting the egr mapped out? No more particulates, no more DPF issues.
I've done it ages ago on my 3.0L 2014 model and have only seen one regen occur in 30000km. Tells you something. EGR's are a PITA.

Ian.

Yes i have thought about it but wasn't quite sure if a map would be available for the Euro6 engine yet

I had this done on my 2007 pre dpf ducato and made a big difference

regards Paul

Im at the same start position with this fault. 2017 Ducato 2.3 Comfortmatic.
Ive been conversing with Paul at PC Vehicle Movements who has been very helpful with comments. I have Multiecuscan, current its showing DPF at 52% full, does this matter? whine0 are you watching and can comment? Today Im taking the front off to reach the top front EGR and to check pipes for cracks/ splits, Ive booked at the dealer for next week to see if there are any software updates available.
Any comments appreciated..
