Hi all, has anyone ever tried to upgrade or upgraded an older Ducato (mines a 1996 1.9D Autosleeper Campervan) with a later engine including power steering? I picked up the van a couple of months ago for a good price and am considering buying a boxer/ducato/relay of around 2005, preferably MOT failure with good engine.

Before you ask, yes I do have lots of mechanical experience and have a workshop I can use.

The older Ducato 1.9D isnt exactly a bundle of laughs to drive and no power steering means the missus cant drive it, but because I got a bargain im happy to invest some money into it.

I was just hoping someone might have done something similar before and give me a few tips.

Cheers

Does anyone know if a later 2.0 hdi engine/gearbox would fit in a 1996 Ducato? Someone must have tried to change to a lter engine?

The 2.5 engine fitted into the same chassis around the same year may well be a bolt-in except perhaps for the exhaust connection to the turbo. I'm not so sure it will deliver much more power than the 1.9.

There is not much room behind the cylinder block as the bulkhead is quite close but anything previously fitted in the same chassis can be expected to be a swap candidate includung the power steering pump and reservoir.

Don't forget you will need to change the steering rack too.

I'm curious how it went OP.
Because I bought the same van this winter. It had a new headgasket. It blew a few months later. Not sure how, so I suppose a new engine is expensive, but necessary.
What kind of prices did you encounter for the motor, and which ones were compatible?
