Having bought a new Ducato based motorhome in 2017, it has now developed a major fault which my main dealer is struggling with. It regularly but not always comes up with an error message that says something like "Transmission not available, please consult handbook" and will not let you select any gear. By switching the ignition off and on several times, it will eventually start normally. It has also acted weirdly in traffic, clunking slowly eventually down the gears while slowing and slowly back up again while accelerating but with a lot of hesitation. The garage have downloaded and reset software, replaced a clutch sensor and now the actuator, but still the problem. They are now advised by Fiat to remove gearbox to access the clutch and slave cylinder because they think it will be a fault in one or both of these!! Any thoughts anyone?

Hi Did they check gear position sensor? Normaly kicking out P1741-1C

No Fiat dealer anywhere will struggle to diagnose and fix a comfort-matic gearbox that a fact

check the brake fluid in the small container ,not the one from your brakes but a little one deep onder the bonnet the fluid drives the robotic clutch and if thats gets low you will get this warning cheers and succes

Hi Again,
Garage eventually diagnosed damage to clutch, some dampness around slave cylinder, so replaced both as well. All put together and everything works fine over 2,000 miles since. Bill was over £2,100 - Fiat refused to pay anything! Rapido dealer from whom I bought (Highbridge Caravans ) listened and paid a contribution of £500!

We are also having Comfortmatic gearbox problems on Hymer 2017. Had to drive from Spain to UK during lockdown with no reverse gear! Hymer dealership having trouble diagnosing problem, have quoted £6000 for new gearbox & clutch! The vehicle has only done 14000 miles.
Any info would be gratefully received. Many thanks

Hi :)

Any obvious signs..?

Are the levels in the joint fluid tank correct ( have you needed to top them up ) ?

The diagnotic software is readily available for most FIAT robotised gearboxes

SEARCH MultiECUScan on here ;)

It does sound like a typical clutch disengagement issue.. but of course this isnt a typical clutch

You need the software to attempt a recalibration
Where are you based..?

Charlie .. near the M4

Hi Charlie, thanks for your reply. We are in Cheshire & our Motorhome is at Travelworld in Stafford.
We are currently going round in circles with this issue. Travelworld say they are getting advice from Fiat but we appear to be getting nowhere. On Wednesday we received an email quoting £6000 for new gearbox & clutch, then yesterday the technician said there was a 20% chance they could repair it! I am currently waiting for photographic evidence of the damage & full breakdown of costs to repair or replace.
When I speak to them I will quote your reply.
Many thanks
Carol

Hi Carol :)

I can see you are 'caught in the middle' there :(

So I can get a better understanding of the problem...

It couldnt go in Reverse.. did this :

Slowly get worse.. ok cold..a problem when hot ?

Did it make any odd noises ?

What did the display tell you ? ( if anything..)

As a footnote:
The MultiECUScan website says it supports both the 250+290 ducato builds
And their Marelli Selespeed CFC 348 gearboxes

Hi Charlie,
The problem came on suddenly, no noise, no warning on dash.
I have just had another conversation with the dealership, they sent the gearbox to a specialist, without us authorising this. The specialist says”the reverse selector shaft is cracked due to metal fatigue”. How is this possible given the age & mileage of the vehicle?
Many thanks

Was this issue ever resolved? I have a 2014 Fiat 500L that has been having the same problem since February (2022). Auto shops can't figure out the issue, some recommend replacing the entire transmission which costs more than the car's value price.

we've just had the dreaded symtoms on a Fiat Ducato, all came down to a faulty concentric slave cylinder, we changed the clutch as we were in there,
had to bleed the system using laptop snd software, including a End of line and a calibration, all happy again..

Were a small garage that has invested in the tools to do these now, based in Somerset.
