Hey all, -signed up today. Sure I already was but hello anyway :)

My fan is working poorly. Sounds like a big end has failed lol. I've decided from research that it's the bushes in fan motor or worse case I'll need a new fan motor. Question is, how do I remove it? Van is mostly stripped but I can't get the motor out? It seems attached to main housing behind centre storage box? Supposed to be away at a funeral next Fri!! Any suggestions please? TY

Hi,

maybe check the plug/wires and heater blower resistor first.

Had the same problem and cables to resistor plug were green and plug partly molten. Fan performing much better now!
But I have a 244.

Good luck

Thanks Astragalus. Appreciate the reply.

If I put some excessive pressure on the blower wire plug the fan spins up faster but not full speed. It seems to work at different levels on all speeds.

I managed to separate the housing enough to see the fan blades but its not how it comes apart? With tension on the housing it spins better too. I sprayed a bit of wd40 towards the bearing but it didnt do much. I cant see it being the resistor or switch back but could be proven wrong as the fan isnt too difficult to spin with a screwdriver.. I'm out of time this week. Away tomorrow am to a funeral (on my birthday) so have to hope the screen doesnt mist up. We'll cope. I'll let you know how I get on.

Hi,

just to clarify, I mean the heater resistor loom wire. It is not on the fan.

It is the brown plug left/below the fan, see attached picture. Our cables looked like picture2, and plug was partly molten. Just loose the screw and you can check the resistor too.

Hope this helps.

best regards
Astragalus

Evening, yeah, that connector is closer to the central storage bin? Mine looks like new there? I cant decide 100% whats wrong. If I can get the fan out and plugged in to observe it better I sould be able to confirm its tiredness? As it 'works' in a fashion on all speed settings I'm assuming its not the resistor or teh fan switch? I'm tempted to order a new fan and when I see exactly what turns up, it should be clearer how it installs? We survived this weekend away camping. Had a fab time. 700 miles with no issues. And a great pub too.

looking again, in pic 1, is that where the multi plug connects? I'm not sure I have seen that part? are there only two plugs for the heater? The fan has a two wire plug connected to the left of the fan in the passenger footwell and the resistor 5 wires in a black plug, iirc, to the right of the fan housing??

Hi there,

uploaded a bigger picture. My vehicle is the 244, year 2004, but they are all similar.

The resistor is left of the fan, see red arrow. It is a 5 pin plug.

I too thought that our fan was just "worn out" and wanted to replace it, but found out that the loom wire to the resistor caused the problem. At this stage the fan sometimes stopped working alltogether and sometimes only running on max speed setting.

Don't know how to get the fan out, never tried.

Check the selector switch as well if the resistor and loom is ok.

And check here:

Good luck!

Well, I finally got the blower fan out. I missed the all important screw. Took it apart as much as I could cleaning it up. I decided with 150,000 miles its entitled to be retired off so bought a new one which arrived today from Germany. Unfortunately, whilst it looks identical (ish) it sucks rather than blows so no air comes out the dash vents. The fan has an arrow embossed on it and its the opposite to the oe fan. I've contacted the supplier, deciphered my chassis number to get the date of build. sent images of the part numbers etc and await their reply. In the mean time the oe one is refitted and working.. I am not confident it will last so hopefully can get the correct replacement from my supplier buycarparts.co.uk. I'll let you know how I get on :)

Hello All,
As a new member, I'm probably posting in the wrong place but .... I have a Ducato x250 with a damaged heater fan. One of the two electrical terminals has broken off and is still wedged in the spade connector. Fan works fine when connector pressed against broken terminal end.
Question 1: how do I get the fan/motor out? It looks impossible.
Question 2: does the motor (+terminals) come out separately from the fan?
Question 3: motorhome people say that no after market units available. Is this true? Does anyone know how I find the part number?
I would be grateful for ANY advice.
Thanks in advance.

Hi
Some types of fan come apart by rotating them 10 or 15 degrees anticlockwise and then pulling out the motor and fan blades from a fixed circular housing. Not unlike a giant bayonet lightbulb. It takes more than hand pressure (for me anyway) to rotate it, so a small batten of wood and a few taps with a hammer is needed to persuade it. It's quite likely the Ducato has this type of fan, if you look closely at the plastic lugs around the motor body it should be obvious how its attached.

I think if a terminal has broken off inside the fan connector then realistically it's new fan time (£70 ish), though it wouldn't be impossible to dismantle and repair if you are skilled and your time is free.

Thanks for your help Anthony. As a result, I have managed to get the fan out and needn't have dismantled the glove box etc! The terminal was not broken off, just pushed in - someone has obviously been in here before and been careless with the connector. The fan now works but not wholly reliable (internal damage) as jiggling the connector makes the fan stutter. The part number is 77364250 and I am informed that this is oe Fiat only. Have been quoted £289 by Fiat and £129 by eBay - might have to bite the bullet as the unit doesn't look mechanic-friendly.

Thanks everyone, had same problem and is now sorted, much appreciated in a chilly Cumbria ;-)
