Hi everyone, i have a Fiat Ducato 2.8 jtd 2001. It was stalling at junctions so had the crank sensor replaced. Also replaced the passenger side light unit at rear as one lens was broken. The handbrake cable was rusted so that was replaced too. I took it for a test drive today and fund that as soon as it gets to 3000revs approx it stutters like crazy. If i increase on accelerator the revs increase but vehicle doesn’t speed up. Provided i keep revs below 3000 it runs fine. We returned to garage and no faults on reader. No lights on dash either. He did notice reversing lights weren’t working and that’s the switch inside engine so having that replaced tomorrow. Mechanic doesn’t feel that is connected though. Can you offer any advice on what else this could be please? Thank you.

I know that, on a Benz, a failure of the reversing light switch causes limp mode and inability to rev over 3000 along with other issues. Maybe Fiat is the same.

Thank you for replying. One of the mechanics st the garage thought that may be the case too. I will update once the new switch has been installed. Hopefully that’s the problem.

I have a 05 2.8 jtd and the reverse lite switch is dud, and I do not get any symptoms you describe, all is normal. I can't see that an 01 vehicle would have such sophistication to do as you suspect. It sounds like a fuelling issue, maybe a blocked filter, or air leak, or blocked tank breather?

As the revs increase, but speed does not, suggests the clutch is slipping. The stuttering I can only think of the above. Is it a manual or auto? That may possibly make a difference as oigle suggests if an auto?

It’s a manual. We replaced the switch and reverse lights are now working again. However it didn’t stop the limp mode problem sadly. All injectors have been checked and they are all fine. We have just removed the MAP and are twking it to be tested now. It is very clean though so not entirely optimistic that’s the problem either. Air filter and oil filters replaced although they all looked fine. It just seems stuck in limp mode. It’s only been doing this since we replaced the crank sensor to solve the stalling problem. On the bright side it’s no longer stalling.

Limp mode.. without any error codes..

Sounds odd.

Maybe refit old sensor for a test drive ?

As the sensors are notorios for NOT leaving fault codes

The MAP air flow sensor seems to be the problem. New one is ordered so hopefully it will sort it out. If not it’s back to the drawing board.

Replaced the MAP air pressure sensor and although things are improved it still won’t go over 50 mph or 3000 rpm. Someone on another forum has said the 2001 Ducato doesn’t have limp mode? Taking to auto electrician on Wednesday. In the meantime someone suggested actuator or wastegate or turbo problem. Can any body advise if that makes any sense please? Thanks so much. We just don’t know what else to try. So far new crank sensor, new MAP air pressure sensor, injectors checked and all good. All filters changed.

Mutley,,, when working on or disturbing older Fiat wiring under bonnet, there is a very real liklihood of breaking a brittle wire. Not always on the item you were working on, so it may be the only way is to plug thru a dreary and time consuming physical check or the wiring, which is bad enough for DIY but worse if paying someone hourly. I had something go on my ABS which was allegedly an earth wire, but those who knew (and fixed it, to their credit) kept tight lipped. It was a main dealer, so I think I got off lightly at about 350 quid!!

Tom day of Keynsham (Bristol) has got to the bottom of it. The new crank sensor was faulty and the air gap was not set properly. It was a Delphi sensor which by all accounts is a good make but these fiats are fussy little devils so he advised we stick with Bosch parts where possible. The new crankshaft was faulty as well though. Anyhow new Bosch crank sensor fitted and air gap set properly. It’s running a dream now. It’s a fiat 2.8 Jtd 2001 Hymer Swing just in case this info can help anyone else. Thank you so much for all your help. Much appreciated.
