My 2005 2.8JTD Maxi with about 130,000 miles has slightly stiff steering which mostly manifests itself as a slight pull left or right depending on the direction of the last junction turned, also if wound lock to lock ay parking speed on tickover it will slow the engine to the point of stall. It feels like something needs lubrication but what? any suggestions please?

A friend bought an Iveco that was similar..
It was a partially seized joint.

Cheap fix

Strut bearings you might need the bearing v seals when you are replacing them, embed the new bearing and seal in waterproof grease and wipe off the excess grease after reassembly should last the remaining life of the vehicle then

varesecrazy - can you recall which joint, was it a trackrod or strut?
corcai - upper or lower strut bearings?

Theres only a top bearing a piddly steel and plastic needle roller bearing.

Personally..

I would lift front end.

Separate the ball joints....

Pivot things by hand... should be easy to make comparisons.

Had the same thing on a car many years ago it was the bottom ball joint on the suspension leg.
The problem with diagnosing it was it only done it when ithad been driven for a while, it eventually started creaking and I was able to pin it down.
I would start with the nearside bottom one as it gets the most punishment.
With that sort of mileage I think I would just change them both anyway.
