Hello, I have a strange problem with my 'ducato 2.3 multijet 62reg-plate.
It is an intermittent kind of thing; sometimes the mpg reads around 51 mpg at 70mph and sometimes reads 11mpg,
It sometimes goes really fast and other times it hardly wants to move,
Occasionally it belches lots of white smoke for about 1 minute then there is a judder 'like a jumpstart?' Then the smoke clears and all is ok again.

This has gradually got more frequent.

Anyone any ideas.
Thanks. M,Frank

Sticky throttle valve would be first thing I would look at after reading the faults code. white smoke is unburnt diesel which washes the oil from the bore causing the cylinders and rings to wear and can also damage catalytic converter. Keep driving pike that and you cpuld run into huge bills.

Thanks,
I have a code reader for fiat but it doesn't give any codes, eurocarparts do one I shall get it today and give that a go,

Forgot to mention; these problems go away for a bit straight after filling up the diesel tank,
And.... turning sharp right at speed makes it worse. Turning sharp left at speed makes it better (the white smoke thing is rather rare but it going like a sports car one minute and like a well loaded tractor the next is more frequent)

Corcai thanks again, After reading up about sticky throttle problems I'm not so sure it's that as ; the rev's do not control themselves on my ducato they are relative to my accelerator pedal, it seems a mixture problem to me? My wife just told me there was slight black smoke yesterday as she was following me in her car! The ducato was going like a sports car yesterday!

Throttle valve /= Throttle

I think you're confusing the throttle valve with a petrol throttle.

In diesel throttle valves main function is to improve exhaust gas recirculation by restricting intake air, when it sticks you can have insufficient air to burn the fuel injected.

Your first step is read the fault codes

hello again corcai and all,
ok ive got
p2002 (particulate filter?)
p0089 (fuel pressure regulator?)
p2085 (exhaust gas intermittent problem bank1 sensor2)
p0002 Px, on this fault code reader 'Px' means un-resolved issue. (fuel pressure regulator)
do you think p0002 is the underlying cause for the other fault codes to appear and disappear temporarily?
is this a diy possibility? if i could find it that is? is it the little sensor on the end of the injection rail? it looks way too small to be it im guessing?
thanks, MFrank

Is there a MAF on this engine if there is, these faults correspond with one needing cleaned.

Regulator is on the high pressure pump easy enough to change but no guarantee its the cause of the problem p0089 can be injectors, blocked filter, stalling lift pump. Given you are overfuelling it makes it more likely to be the injectors, regulator / regulator wiring.
