Hi all, been a while since I posted on here. For the last 5 months the glow plug warning light comes on for a few mins then goes off. The engine always starts first time. I was going to change them but was told they were okay. Anybody got any ideas what could be causing the warning light to come on ?

Probably corrosion mate,
Had 2 on my old 3.0 Eu5 done after 6 months due to the water ingress,
Was told that they don’t really need doing (probably a get out of doing under warranty as they break off)
And they did break off, fortunately the foreman managed in between jobs to get them out (warranty only covered the part not labour was told) another get out of doing it scare tactic probably)

Check the normal wires and looms from ecu and around glow plug control unit I guess

Hi Any further info on your glow plug problems? I've got a 2014 Ducato 130 which is doing a similar thing. Starts perfectly every time; when the engine is cold I get no warning messages, but once the engine is warm there is a warning message to check glow plugs each time I start up. Local garage hooked up his diagnosis gear and could find no problem displayed. He said if the glow plugs do need replacing please go elsewhere! Reckons they are a sod to remove. The engine has only done 45,000 km.

hi i had the same problem with my 3L it turned out to be the throttle control ( water ingress ) & as for the glow plug warning light it only comes on for a few seconds but its still heating up i think about 10 seconds

Anyone with 3.0 litre check above inlet manifold it collects water from leaking scuttle panel submerging 2 3 ,4 glow this corrodes plug causing light to flash on instrument panel

My relay failed a few months back. It is a 2013 production 180. Showed up on Fiat dealer scan.

Regarding the warning I was getting with a warm engine to check glow plugs: been away travelling for 4 months and continued to get the warning for about the first 3. I was also adding injector cleaner to the fuel - first bottle, every time I filled up, now only 2nd or 3rd fill up. Guess what? No more messages about checking the glow plugs.

bosky your fault clearing is just as likely to be a nice long spell of actually using the van for a fair lenghth of time- weeks and months sitting around causes no end of problems

a tube of silicone and some fresh clips saves no end of probs with these water induced problems-it,s even worse on the vivaro vans

Understand what you say, but we're hardly ever home - the Ducato hardly gets to cool down!

Have a 2014 Ducato (2.3) where the check engine light comes on, faintly, as well as the glow plug light also faintly but the really weird thing is that it only shows up when the cruise control is turned on. Cruise control off, everything normal. I live in sub tropical Queensland so it starts first up every time even in winter. My only "fix" so far is to disconnect the battery, have a cup of tea, but no change after reconnection. Next went looking for the Heater Plugs Control Unit. Thinking check loose fitting electrical connection but can not find the Control Unit. Any clues please? Looking for some collective wisdom for a newbie.

Wiring loom to ECU, if cable tied to ECU mounting bracket, it’s probably worn through the wires, causing short circuit, this in time corrodes the wires causing literally any electrical/mechanical faults, hole could be a pin prick too small to see.

Worth a check, and remove cable tie to stop this happening

Known problem with the instrument cluster. Fiat replace them if still in warranty, but they haven't fixed the source of the fault so the same thing could well happen again later. In the UK a company called Cartronix will replace the faulty part on the cluster with a more durable component for a fairly reasonable price, but you would need to ship it to them.

Thank you RS3100. Your advice confirms ny tentative action, that is, ignore it.
First problem I have had with the motorhome so far so good.

Exactly. Mine was replaced under warranty.

Re the glow plug problem: unlike what I grew up with, the glow plugs on the Ducato don't assist with starting, they are there simply to burn off excess fuel when the engine starts up - for ecological reasons I guess. Vinaka in Hobart said don't worry about, it won't affect the running, prior to my recent service.

On picking the vehicle up later that day they had discovered that the warranty hadn't quite run out (under a month to run), so "would you like us to replace them under warranty?" Oh yes, please!

Problem fixed.

Also replaced the timing belt as a safety precaution due to age, not mileage.
