Hi,, just replaced the battery (engine) in my Burstner a class motorhome, built on an 05 2.8jtd and when first switched on after reconnect, I get ABS light and handbrake light. Tried a short drive, never got to 10mph due to no room, and several swith on/off cycles. No change. Any thoughts- this fault was never there before the battery was replaced. Should it be necessary to plug a laptop in, what do I need? IIRC I have fiat ecuscan somewhere, but what about leads? I have an ELM 327 (may not do abs??), or a generic bluetooth OBD reader. I also have a vgcomm which I suppose is useless for fiats. If I need something, what should I get? All help welcome!

Vag com cable will work with muktiecuscan abs is on pin 1 and vag com kline is wired to pin 7. You can either buy an adapter or open the vag com cable and solder a jumper wire between pin 1 and 7 or resolder it from pin 7 and solder it to pin 1.

Would not have thought a vag cable would be useful for fiat! Cheers for the advice- if ot gets necessary I will do it. I have also the vag 3pin adaptors (was for a 99 audi cabrio) Cheers. Dave

Hi, did you ever manage to solve this? I’ve just changed my Ducato battery and now have the same issue!

Many thanks

Ian.

Hi,, it ended up going to Fiat who did sort it, they implied it was an earth issue (which I do actually think it was now), but when questioned further, they did not elaborate. I would suggest checking all earth cables- main ones between engine and body, also check all plugs and connectors between the ECU, ABS unit, and cleanliness of battery terminals and associated fuseboard thereon. Also connections to underbonnet fuse panel, and look inside that for signs of corrosion. TBF it has been OK ever since. I fitted a good quality battery (IIRC a Varta) but these vans with the non full canbus setup, don't like too low of a battery voltage. Not as bad as the later ones maybe, but even so, keep an eye on it.

Fantastic thanks for replying

For info, on the x244, the main chassis earth point is below the battery, and forward of the RH engine mounting. It is a flag terminal off the cable which runs from the battery negatie to a starter motor stud on the clutch (bell)housing. See attached photos.

Just a thought, silly though it may appear! When you fit the battery, make absolutely sure everything is turned off of course, and the keys are not in the switch. BUT! And this is the screwball- put the handbrake off, and leave it off until the battery has been connected for some time before ignition on. An amount of time with the battery disconnected before reconnection may assist too.
