1988 ducato rear brake sensing valve linkage

Hi All, just been for the dreaded MOT on my 1988 Ducato / Burstner Motorhome and its failed on the Rear Brakes and especially the BRAKE LOAD SENSING VALVE LINKAGE DEFECTIVE AND FUNCTION IMPAIRED is what the fail sheet says. However had a quick look underneath and there seems to be a linkage on one side only coming from the valve and travelling around the right-hand side of the rear brake drum and then up onto the chassis, but I cant see any problem with it. Does anyone now how it works or can point me in the direction of a diagram .

Cheers Brian

Re: 1988 ducato rear brake sensing valve linkage

Have you got something like this at the centre of the rear axle? The load sensing valve alters the braking effort to the rear wheels in response to the axle loading. Motorhomes run at near maximum load all the time so the adjuster mechanism tends to sieze up due to lack of use.

Re: 1988 ducato rear brake sensing valve linkage

All I can tell you is that it is an al-co chassis with Torsion Bar suspension i.e. the axle passes through the chassis rather than being hung underneath.

I went on that link to tab 5 and that looks like the configuration I have got, however I didn't see the adjusters. So I take it that is hiding up behind the backplate somewhere. I will have a proper look tomorrow.

Re: 1988 ducato rear brake sensing valve linkage

Hi again, well have had a look underneath and have found the adjuster and the reason for the failure.

If I tell you I was recovered in my absence back in August and being a very low road clearance they managed to bend up my rear bumper by about twenty degrees, I thought that was the only damage until now. The solid bracket that holds the adjuster off the back of the Brake Drum is bent right up, the only way that I can think this has happened , is when they were unloading the Van the rear wheel came off the ramp and the side came up under the bracket thus forcing it up. Luckily its an easy fix. See photo; Thanks for your help
