Hi

I have a 2001 Ducato with 1.9TD (DHX) engine and a five speed gearbox, and was wondering if it is feasible to convert it to a 6 speed? Or would it be better to do an engine swap for the 2.3JTD at the same time?

Cheers

If you can find a 6-speed that will fit your block, you will be doing well. But if you can find a gear-change linkage that will change all those 6 speeds without getting cross-legged, you will be doing even better! Beware!

The 1929 TD engine is a very good engine indeed and I would stick to that. For the rest, research it very carefully before you spend any money.

My coach-built caravan is very heavy but gets along nicely with the 1929 turbo engine and the 5-speed gearbox. Change down early on hills and don't let it slog in the high gear nor over-rev in the lower gears.

You will see little benefit with thesixth gear. I recently fitted 195/70R14 tyres instead of 185/80R14 to give a useful little increase to the gear ratios.

Thanks for that.

The gearbox isn't as smooth as it could be, so I think it'll be needing a rebuild sometime soon. I thought if I'm spending a pot of money, an upgrade might be a better bet.
