Hello All, I hope someone can help me with the confusionI have created for myself. My plan is to transplant a Fiat 2.0 JTD from a 2006Ducato to my 1990 Talbot express camper. This engine was picked for no more reasons than it was found cheap andwith surprisingly low mileage in an MOT failure Ducato Van.
Obviously this engine is common rail and electronicallycontrolled so it was never going to be the easiest installation…..
I was able to test the engine thoroughly before removaland it all started and run perfectly, so no worries there (or so I thought).
Now, the engine has been transplanted along with thecomplete wiring harness inside and out, the plan was to reduce the un-necessarybulk of the harness once I had the van running keeping the original Talbotharness for the lights and fan ect.

The problem I now have is that I am unable to get theengine running. It turns over as fast asit ever did but does not fire.I do notthink it is an immobiliser issue as the light goes off on the dash as it didpreviously, if I disconnect the immobiliser as an experiment the warning lightstays on the dashboard.

Like I say the engine, gearbox and harness has been transferredcomplete except for the following modifications:

  • Fuel lift pump- instead of using the in tankfuel pump I have utilised the original tank and added an in line fuel pumpwhich is wired up to the harness as the old one was. I don’t think this is an issue as I can hearit working as soon as I switch the ignition on and if I disconnect the returnline there is a steady stream of fuel returning to the tank.
  • Air filter- No room for the original air filterso I have added a cone type filter in it’s place.
  • Exhaust- Custom made exhaust as the originalwould never have fitted.
  • Wiring loom- everything is in place as it was, obviously I have had to add new earth points as necessary.
  • EGR- I struggled to fit the engine with the EGRassembly in place as it clashed with the bulkhead. I therefore removed the valve and coolingassembly and made a blanking plate for both the exhaust and inlet ends. I wander if this could cause someissues? I would at least expect it to startbefore throwing some errors???? The solenoid EGR is still connected.
Also I should mention that I have connected my OBD readerto the harness and there are no current or stored codes. The check engine light is not active on thedash.
What I would really like to learn from the expertise ofthis forum is: what inputs does thisengine need to be able to run? E.g air mass, immobiliser, engine speed, camposition…..
I have really struggled to find a schematic for thisengine, if anyone has one they could share I would be very grateful.

Any advice or suggestions as to what I may have missedwould be gratefully received, as I really need to get this camper out of myworkshop soon.

    Thanks in advance,

    Will.

You are 100% wasting your time without at least a basic compatible obd code reader, a kkl cable costs a fiver and with the demo of multiecuscan will allow you to see whats going on. The 244 ducato is not generic OBD compatible most generic ones won't work with it.

But which van did the engine come from? if it's 2006 JTD I guess a 244 in which case you will get slightly more functionality with a ELM 327 interface like
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271275445368
as this will read the CAN bus. As a minimum it will tell you if the engine ECU has been enabled by the immobiliser system. You can then start looking at other issues. It could be anything, but most likely is you have damaged a connection somewhere.

The 2.0 wasn't available in the 250, there nothing that needs CAN the ecu is EDC15C7 and the code unit is connected by K line to pin 11.

Once you have a diagnostic connected, you need to check for cranking signal, cam signal, fuel pressure at fuel rail, minimum 250Bar, immobiliser signal received and start up allowed.

all excellent advice, this explains why my basic OBD reader isn't telling me very much. I will do some ebaying and hopefully have some more ideas by the weekend.
Thanks.
Will.
