So was driving to Edinburgh today, when I got to my destination, I went to turn the engine off, only it wouldn't turn off even with the key out, so had to stall it, it started fine and then drove back home, but the car symbol with padlock was on all the way home, tried turning it off when I got home and again it wouldn't, so with the engine still running, I turned the key very slightly in the ignition barrel and it switched off, bit when I went to turn it back on it was turning over but wouldn't catch and the car symbol was on again, found that if I turned the key a little slower it started no bother, but still wont switch off.

Summary:

1. Engine won't switch off normal, but turn the key from off to on very slightly as if turning on and it turns off.
2. Car symbol with padlock on and won't start unless turning the key a little slower.

any ideas folks?

Must be a broken ignition switch. That is the plastic part at the end of the ignition barrel, probably only available as a complete unit.

Switch is normally separate from lock, and this seems to be the case for Ducato according to ePer. It's listed under starting equipment.

so would that mean re-programming after changing the switch, seems i can only find complete units, who would be able to identify this as the mechanic wasn't keen to take it on, mentioned going to an auto electrician.

Hi @brox
You have not said exactly what model/year/engine you have, but generally you should not have to reprogramme for just a switch replacement. This assumes it's a conventional key with a metal blade. If you change the lock, you will either have to programme thr new keys, or swap the blades/transponder over. Have you looked at ePer (see link at top of forum homepage) or tried a Fiat dealer. A new lock means new keys so if it is oly the switch you are paying for a lot that you don't need.

Hi g8rpi
Its a 2007 2.3 Multijet 120, Had a look on ePer can't see anything past a Ducato 2002, the key I have is a flick key, not been to a fiat dealer as the nearest dealer to me who deal with commercials is about 60 miles away, was gonna try a local auto electrician as a friend said it might be a loose connection, i can start and stop the engine eventually which i can deal with just now, just annoying and didn't want to start tampering with it myself incase it stopped working completely.

I have ePER about two years old.
Listing under "Nuovo Ducato 2006 -", it appears that the switch is available separately, but is not the usual plastic lump on the end of the housing, but comes inside a new housing. Not sure of the detail, but it would appear that you would swap your key and lock barrel over into the new switch housing.

There are a few variations, with date change points, so can't advise a part number. PM your full VIN number and I'll try to fathom it. They were about £80 two years ago, so will be more now.

The listing does show Peugeot and Citroen variations, surprisingly, but this suggests that your Peugeot or Citroen van dealer may be able to help, if one is closer than the Fiat commercial dealer. (I assume you are aware that they are the same van with different marque detail only)

Might be able to find one from a scrap Fiat, Peugeot or Citroen, but may need to compare accurately.

Portland_bill thanks for the info, I will get a look at the vin later today, jumped in after a day of not using it and started and stopped fine, so seems to be temperamental albeit the engine management light is on now.

Hey, did you manage to get to the end of this ? I have the exact same van and exact same issue right now and need help :(
