I wonder why it is that some filters never leak? I had a 2.3 and a 3L and had no problems. Current MH has the new 'easy' change filter so ok there then except for the cost.

Calibrated hands. Some people just break stuff.

That is a worry then as most people report them leaking after having been in the hands of the garage trade.

Believe me I was including the trade in the 'some people just break stuff' (y)

From personal experience:
A new unit from a sealed "genuine spare parts" box will not leak until the cartridge is replaced.
How soon the leakage occurs depends on the new cartridge seal, the guy who did the job and external factors like air temperature and road conditions. There are new seals with the wrong shape and/or thickness, mechanics using a vise instead of the proper tool, people who do not lubricate the thread and the ones using just their elbow joint to determine what is 30 nm torque.

The worst I encountered was an Italian Fiat "specialist" who took the badly leaking unit to his workshop and came back saying he tightened it so it would never leak again. Shortly thereafter, going downhill on a steep mountain road, the filter housing burst open where he had put it in a vise and within 2 miles we lost almost all fuel.

I've owned my 2010 X250 for about 5 years so can guarantee that the fuel filter has not been touched during this time. Nevertheless it has just let go (at 26300 miles)

Luckily, due to all the forewarnings on this forum, I've been carrying a spare on board for the last 4 1/2 years (and sold one to a fellow ralllier during this time!)
