Hi, I'm looking at motorhomes, and I've come across one which although not perfect is a possibility, but it has the 2.8 idTD engine which is unfamiliar to me, I've had the 2.8 JTD and was more than happy with it (prefer the X250 2.2, but funds don't stretch that far) so can anyone tell me what the differences are, IE performance and economy in particular, is it one to steer clear of?

Cheers Kev.

The idtd is an excellent engine its direct injected and fuel economy is about the same as the jtd but without the complications of the high pressure injection. The only possible disadvantage is that they only produced it for a short period and it does have electronics so younger mechanics may not be familiar with mechanical side and older mechanics may not understand the electronics.

Hi
just got one of these engines in a hymer
had a jtd in previous mmotorhome

what electronics are in this motor

is there a diagnostic plug on these

what is correct oil

approx fuel consumption 28-30 ?

Thanks Avee

Later ones have armoured code 1 immobiliser, crank sensor and simple egr ecu don't know of any diagnostics.

With a motorhome fuel consumption estimates are not much use due to the massive variation in size and weight and drag and driving styles. If you take it easy and potter along at 50 you might even see up to 32mpg. 70 on the motorway could be 24mpg or less in a large motorhome. Over 65mph economy falls rapidly.

Just to mention that actually it's over about 55mph that fuel economy starts to fall off a cliff as you increase by each mph beyond that amount.

Below 55mph the biggest drag factor is rolling road resistance, but above that speed it's wind resistance that becomes logarithmically higher and takes over as the biggest factor.

It's no accident that lots of HGV's are speed limited to 56mph....because that's roughly the optimum speed to maximise fuel economy.

I was recently in France and sat at a steady 90KPH on the decent roads, I didn't actually check it but I believe about 30 MPG which I think is very good. 2001 2.8JTD in a Rapido which was well loaded!

I can't believe I never came back and thanked you guys for the responses, old age and senility probably.

I have stuck with the Jtd and only had minor issues with them, intercooler pipe coming off etc.

Thanks to all who responded

Hi! Good choice to stick with the JTD. I've had both the 2.8 idTD 1999 in my previous camper and now I've got the 2.8 JTD 2002. When it comes to fuel economy, they are very similar. The big difference is in the feeling you get as driver I think. I find the JTD to be a lot smoother, it revs like a normal car, and also sounds like it spins a bit smoother.

It's probably partly in my mind, but when I had the idTD, I always felt a bit hesitant to rev it high in 4th gear, as you're supposed to do because the 5th gear was sensitive. Always felt like I was asking a lot from the engine, it definitely sounded like that. Loud tractor-like diesel noise when revving above 2.500 rpm. Now with the JTD I never get that sorry feeling... it just revs like a car up to 3.000 revs without loud crying, smooth and nice. I like it a lot!
