I am getting a warning light & my OBD 2 reader the code is P0101 & P0111 which is to do with the masss air flow sensor & the air flow intake temperature. When I reset it after a time it will come back sometimes just showing the MAS fault. I took it off to see if it can be cleaned but this doesn't seem to be practical, is there a way to check if it is faulty using a multimeter? I saw a video on Youtube showing somebody doing this but it was an american one & was lacking any info on how to check it & what the readings should be. I looked on the web & the cheapest one I could find was from Europarts for £85 so I would like to be sure it was faulty before replacing.

Another problem that I have is the cruise control has stopped working, I checked the fuse but don't know where else to start looking for the problem

You can clean it there are tins of maf cleaner in most motor factors. Could be the wiring/connectors. Cheap maf is a waste of time usually.

Haven't found anywhere that stocks any specific MAF cleaner, all the local motor spares I rang didn't think it possible to clean it without risking damaging it. That is why I was hoping that somebody could give me some info on how I can check if the MAF is faulty or the problem is elsewhere.

It can be cleaned using an electrical contact cleaner, it's a solvent spray from stores like Maplins. make sure its the type that leaves no residue.

It may not need cleaning at all just take it out and inspect it. It doesn't take much to throw off a MAF reading but it would have to be very scabby to throw off IAT.

I just noticed in your other post you say its a motorhome so I'm guessing its very low miles and the MAF isn't dirty or faulty and its more likely water ingress / corrosion related from standing around all year.

Halfords contact cleaner is almost identical in composition to the commercial MAF cleaners, people damage them by using aggressive solvents like carburettor cleaner that can contain among others MEK, Toluene and Acetone and by physically damaging them using cotton buds etc.

The best you can do in terms of testing a range error is plot the maf readings and look for obvious errors. You can also guesstimate the air mass from rpm, map, temperature and an estimate of volumetric efficiency its only useful for sanity checking the readings.

I did take it out, real struggle as there isn't much access from above, couldn't actually see much as it seems to be sealed in the housing. Mileage is around 35k so quite low & due to house move it has been standing more than it should have been. From what I could see there was nothing obvious but it seems that these things are very sensitive.
Just looked & Maplins contact cleaner £3.99 for 200ml Halfords is same price for 400ml. There doesn't seem to be anyway to get to the sensor as it is fixed in the housing, is it just a case of giving it a good spray & can doing this actually damage the sensor. Read the reviews on the Halford site & quite a few people have used it successfully for cleaning the MAF so at that price it might be worth a shot.

For cleaning the MAF, use Isopropyl spray, also from Maplins.

Don't touch any internal parts of the MAF sensor and only spray the MAF wires from a distance, 12-18", over a container so you can see what, if any **** comes off it. Soak the MAF and let it air dry only.

Having had similar issues on cars, I don't think cleaning is going to work, only a new MAF (if you're 100% sure it's faulty) will work and then, as said above, don't buy cheap ones off Ebay. Stick to Bosch or OEM ones a fitted by Fiat.
