The rear lights on this van (not m/home ) are as follows:
Side lights are dual filament bulbs and the 9second filament glows when rear fogs are selected. Is this the standard wiring ? I have always believed that sides and brakes were combined but this van has separate single filament bulbs as brakes.A tow bar has been fitted at some point and I am wondering whether the wiring has been confused.
Hope someone can shed some light :) on this

Have you then got two separate red 21W single filament bulbs on each side, one brake light and one foglight, as well as the dual 21W/6W one for sidelight use as well as the 21W indicator bulb and 21W reversing bulb)

If so that seems rather a lot of bulbs (5) for a standard van:eek:

Or do you have the set-up with one clear 21W and one red 21W as well as the red dual filament 21W/6W and the indicator bulb on either side? This makes 4 which seems more likely!

In this case, discounting the clear 21W reversing bulb and the 21W indicator bulb, the remaining single filament 21W red light will/should be your foglight and the 21W filament in your dual filament bulb will/should be your brakelight.

Hope this makes sense!

Hi Crossingkeeper,
let me try and simplify, when the sidelights are on the 6w filament of the dual filament bulb lights up,when you then apply the brakes a separate 21w single filament bulb glows

When the rear fogs are switched on the second filament of the sidelight bulb then glows

The rev.lamps and indicators are all o.k.
So there are 4 bulbs each side,3 singles and 1 double which all work fine but not as I would have anticipated as I would have expected the brakes to activate the second filament of the sidelight bulb ?
Hope this describes how the rear lamps are at present, whether this is how the factory would have wired the lamps is what I am questioning.
Are you with me buddy

Hi,

It sounds like the wiring for the fog lights & brake lights have somehow got swapped around as every vehicle I've owned has had an single 21W filament bulb for a foglight & brake lights as the 21W filament in the dual filament bulb (these being often referred to as stop/tail bulbs;))

At least it is an easy fix as you should be able to just switch the spade connectors over at the back of the light fittings rather than play around with the wiring.

Hi,
Thought I'd check here first before changing the wiring to the sensible layout.
I think someone must have crossed these wires when the towbar was being fitted. Thanks for the posts.
