I started talking about clutch adjustment in another thread but having tried it I think I need more help!
I was having trouble with the clutch not disengaging fully, I was advised that if I adjusted the clutch cable so that the clutch pedal was level with the brake pedal it'd be right.
I tried that but it made it impossible to release the clutch & get gears at all.
I've adjusted it so it clears fully but the pedal is now very high.
Any advice?
Can the operating arm be in the wrong position on its shaft?
Cheers
Gareth

Gareth,mine is exactly the same.
I've put a new clutch in.
The pedal is a lot higher than the brake pedal.
I've tried everything, and nothing has solved it.
So I've just left it alone.

Oops.
I'll take some pics of the clutch pedal and the gearbox end,I'll post them tomorrow.
I'm off to download with the old bus on Thursday, just like every year ;-)

This year I'm going to use her every week.
The odd trip to work (bacon sarnies at break) and shopping.

The clutch pedal is much higher than the brake pedal.
I've replaced the clutch, but it still feels like I need a new one.
It's not slipping, but doesn't feel like it has a load of bite left in it.
She's just done 900 Kms this weekend.
55/60 all the way.

Thanks for all that my clutch pedal is about the same as yours
Good trip?
55-60 ! I wish!! I'm 50 tops but hoping FULL service will improve it ;)

She will do 65,but I don't like to hammer the old girl.
I'm going to replace the cable,it might be stretched after all this time.
I've been using her to travel to work,it's a nicer drive and I have somewhere to sit at break.
I'll let you know how it goes with the cable.

Yeah, thanks, if its just the cable it'd be nice but thinking about it its almost as though the clutch needs a longer pull to get from 'on' to 'off'. Its not wear in the pivot is it? Or I wonder if the release fork is loose on the shaft?

I've been puzzling about this as well since I originally posted about clutch pedal being level with brake pedal (I got this advice from the Peter Russek manual)

My van clutch worked well when set like this; it would be interesting to check what distance the pedal travels between the fully engaged and fully disengaged positions to see if there is enough room to accommodate this travel when the pedal is set level with the brake.

Of course it could be that the brake pedal is low:eek:

hi gareth and others who suffer with this problem i am assuming we are talking about the talbot----- fiat mark ones and two aprox 1986------------1994 anyway the problem is fixable one of the main reasons for the problem is the clutch return spring at the pedal box so remove old weak spring and refit with a new shorter stronger version this will prevent the clutch pedal returning to a high position the replacement spring need not be a fiat spring as long as it is short and strong enough to do the job there are other steps you can take but i suggest you try this remedy first after you have fitted new spring then adjust clutch cable so that you have a small degree of free play and i meen SMALL not a inch and a half but a degree of free play is essential as no free play will lead to eccessive clucth wear hope this helps. jt

50MPH is very poor i am assuming we are talking petrol 1970cc engine i think you need a full sevice by someone who knows these old engines as todays modern mechanics dont know how to set up this old stuff if 50mph is top speed i think your ignition timing may be out but there could be other issues if your milage justifies it you could consider converting to LPG but this could be as much as £900 for a single point system. just a few thoughts jt

Hi Jt that's good advice on the clutch, I'll look at it ASAP
As for the top speed I've only had it 4 months, done all the "gotta sort that ASAP" jobs. Now its in for test so holding my breath until its through! Next job is as full engine service, I mean plugs, leads, cap, arm, points, condenser, oil & filter, air filter, belts, rad & thermostat!!
I'm a trained mechanic so I'll do it all my self, might get someone to lend me a strobe light to time it though ;)
Thanks for all the advice :)

Just got home after a day on Shell Island, I've been experimenting & I'm sure it is the return spring gone weak.
I'll have a look at it & try to match it up ;)
