Hi there.

We own a 1993 Fiat Ducato motorhome in excellent condition. Unfortunately it failed its annual road worthiness test because one of the CV boots keeps popping off (very same issue last year).

I had the same issue last year and brought it to a local main dealer and they have told me of a "special tool" that is needed to fit the boot properly, given the age and style of fitting, which is no longer in use.

Does anyone know of such a tool? Where could I find one I wonder? I would purchase immediately if anyone could help me out.

Much appreciated.
Moonfleet.

What have they used to fit it? Did they try to use the old style strap with a pliers end snips or something? You might be able to try a longer neoprene universal boot with more corrugations so that its not under tension, just fit with the agricultural blak cable ties - the ones you can swing off with a vicegrips. Getting a spurious cv joint and boot kit might be the way to go so that you have a normal groove and strap for mounting the boot.

I'm not sure to be honest with you - I had a missed call from them this morning so I'll put your solution to them, thanks.

I've had a suggestion to use a couple of hose clips as well to secure the boot so maybe this is the way to go.

I've been on eBay as well in the hopes of coming up with a solution but no joy yet there.

It's in great order, a bit dated looking now maybe alright, but outside of that it has been very well cared for and only a couple of small things to be done to get it through, The boot is a recurring problem though unfortunately.

Thanks for the response!!

Jubilee type hose clips will probably be too wide for the groove, and even if they did fit, the extra weight of the screw part on one side will put the joint out of balance, probably causing vibrations.

As mentioned above, industrial type cable ties are the way to go.

EDIT: Alternatively search eBay for " cv boot pliers ", over 150 hits. You'd need to make sure they're big enough for your clips though. A blunt pair of pincers would also do the job.

Thats what my dad uses a long handles pincers from aldi with the edge ground off. Personally once I found a source for proper cable ties I wouldn't look any further,

The garage has a new/different type boot ordered so maybe they will have more success with putting this one on.

Point taken about the hose clips - fair play. So industrial type cable ties and a bit of eBay for CV boot pliers in advance of it going into the garage. I can drive in with a few suggestions then at least. Don't want to be going back again next year with the same problem.

Very much appreciate the help and suggestions - didn't think anyone would bother given the age of the campervan! These forums are great if you're lucky enough to find one with decent members.

Go to your local agri store/co-op tell em you want black cable ties for a cv boot they won't sell you any ****e like the motorfactors would.

Rings a bell with my camper from a long time ago.
If it's the same, the cv boot fits "inside" the hub, in a very tight recess in the back of it.
Mine couldn't even fit the head of the cable tie in with it, and the previous owner had tried to wire it on, and it kept popping off.
Only solution was the correct fiat part in my case, (still available then) but for once I didn't do it, so can't say what it looked like. Very low profile I guess.
