I have written a separate post for this as the procedure is slightly different to that described for a X250 in this thread.

However were it not for bencey pointing out that there is a pivot that can seize I wouldn't have even known it was there to be greased, so many thanks for the heads-up.

My van is an 2006 244 with a 5 speed gearbox with reverse gear in the left and up position.

The gear selector casting is cylindrical, about 1.25" diameter and 1.5" long and swivels on a horizontal shaft at the rear of the gearbox. The 13 mm nut and washer securing this in position on the shaft are underneath a black plastic shroud. With the nut removed I found that I could push the casting far enough along its shaft to be able to apply grease to the shaft without having to pop the cables off their pivots. There is also a pad on this casting which pushes/swivels against another casting as the gears are operated and I applied grease to this. I greased the cable pivots as best as I could (but was reluctant to pop the cable ends off in case this spread the joints and weakened them)

After all this lubrication, gear selection was noticeably smoother and easier and of course it won't deteriorate any more. The heater intake drain hose terminates just above this selector assembly (which might be why the joints have dried out:rolleyes:) so I finished the job by extending this hose with a short length of suitable plastic pipe.
