Ducato X250 - Water collecting on top of the engine

Hello,

I've recently purchased a Ducato X250 2.2 (2007) based motorhome.

Having contacting Fiat UK, I understand my van has has the work done to "resolve" the recall for water collecting on top of the engine, however, reading a few motorhome forums there is suggestion an engine cover was not installed unless specifically requested by the customer?!

So the question is, does anyone had a pic of what the top of the engine should look like with the cover installed?

I washed the van this evening only to find the injectors sitting in a pool of water :(

I've been looking at the scuttle and can clearly see the water is leaking where its joined together....

Does anyone have any additional tips for this problem? I'm going to attack the scuttle with a tube of silicone sealant and see if I can seal the top halfs together better as well as the rubber to the screen.

I understand as part of the recall, Fiat spray the injectors with Waxoyl - I assume there's no reason why i can apply a further coat to ensure good coverage - I was concerned with the heat from the engine burning the waxoyl.

Being a motor home Its going to be sitting around and currently, likely with the injectors in a pool of water currently :(

Thanks

Iain

Hi
Welcome to the forum,
First I would not allow water to sit around the injectors, mop it up & run the engine until it is completely dry if it is stored for a period of time.
I am not sure what the cover for the 2.2 looks like or how effective it is, but the 3.0 version is a black plastic cover designed to redirect the water from the leaking scuttle to the RHS of the engine (looking from the front) the only problem is that it is so shallow I doubt it works effectively & only redirects water to other parts of the engine compartment. It is not only the rusting injectors &/or glow plugs you have to worry about.
The water also causes corrosion in electrical items as well - causing intermittent electrical problems over time. There have been cases of corrosion in the fuse boxes, Throttle valves, & other electrical items & on versions with timing belts, these breaking due to water freezing in the belt compartment, then when the engine is started - either jumping teeth or the belt breaking - bending valves etc!
It also appears to leak at the ends near the headlights flooding other electrical components.
If you haven't already read the previous posts relating to this problem - see links in following thread
https://www.fiatforum.com/ducato/27...ucato-water-ingress-unsealed-engine-rust.html.
The trouble is even if the cover &/or waxoyl has been done it is most likely rusting has already started & it is not until the injectors/glow plugs need to be removed for service etc that trouble appears.
The only thing is to ensure that the complete scuttle is sealed & even additional drains be put in the completely sealed scuttle (have seen this done - see attached pic of what somebody has done to his - thanks to whoever) & maybe hope the injectors etc won't have to be removed too soon & if they do - come out with no problems unlike some unlucky people.
Cheers (y)

Guys,

Many thanks for the information - Sounds like I have some work to do :)

I dont suppose you have the part number for the engine cover? A call into my local Fiat dealer is also in order.....

Thanks

Iain

You have a PM (y)

Any chance you could also look up the part number for the coolent return pipe that runs over the top fo the engine (as seen in the pic runnig over the top of the cover). The one on my van is quite corroded and i'd like to replace before it starts to leak.

Id like to go armed with a list number numbers to my local dealer :)

Thanks again!

Iain

Using your supplied VIN it comes up with "Cover" - 55212592 -item 3 in the picture.
I am pretty sure that this is the original engine cover & Fiat has now produced a newer version to "cope" with the faulty scuttle design since, as that doesn't look like the one in the picture that steve928 has posted. Maybe check with a Fiat Professional dealer to see if there is a recall fitment & its Part No.

Isn't that coolant pipe your referring to made of plastic ??
anyway Part No. is 1359046080 "Hose" - SLEEVES/FLEXIBLE TUBES FOR WATER RADIATOR
Cheers (y)

Thats excellent, many thanks FreeSpirit. :D

The pipe is definately metal - its got rust on it! Connects to the 'normal' rubber water piping either end, just runs over the top of the engine in metal.
