I have an 01 Ducato 2.8jdt and have had an issue with the cooling fan not running and an engine management dash warning symbol continuously lit.

To cut long story short main dealer told me I needed to replace the ECU and were looking for close to 1000 euro for the system plus its fitting. They were also unsure if the would resolve the problem completly.

I have given the van to an auto electrician who has also had difficulty with it but he suggest he fits an independent cooling system which will run when engine reaches temperature. So great the cooling works but this does not resolve the warning light .

My question is if I get the alternative system installed can I get the warning symbol cleared if not using the engine management to control the cooling system.

Any advice

You should be able to get an ecu/key immobiliser set on ebay for under €150

I think the problem is moisture has gotten into the ECU and it causes a chemical reaction on the PCB.

Considering "the-ecu-doctor.co.uk" who will check my ecu and repair instead of me getting a new one.

Just need to know if I have to plug the van into diagnostic when refitting,

The flash chips should retain their data so you immobiliser should be ok, if he can clear the fault codes on the bench you should be fine. Call him to be sure. If it is water ingress it might just need a good scrubbing internally with an antistatic brush and isopropyl alcohol.
