Big thanks to all of you that have answered in this thread.
Two days ago i was on a trip with my motorhome and the red engline light start to shine anf the speedometer died.
Long story short, after i found this thread i unplugged the preheater, my fuse number 11 do not blow as i turn on ignition and i can now reset my engine light.
I will now order a new preheater but as my vacation starts in just one week i feel so much better as it seems lika i can fix this by myself without to be to stressed about my vacation.

Thanks again// best regards Joakim

Great forum. Had exactly this problem on 2004 Kontiki this week. Luckily I found the forum before I rang for nearest Fiat agent (60 miles away in Inverness). Gave me confidence to drive it in without worrying about any harm. Must recommend Inverness agent Donald MacKenzie as mechanic came up with exactly your explanation, replaced fuse and said if it was his he wouldn't bother replacing the breather heater (especially as it costs £90 and does nothing)!!!
Wow thanks for this info I have had the same problem. My Motorhome wouldn’t start. After the immobilisers were discounted a temporary bypass switch was installed between the starter and gearbox. It then started but gave me a red engine management light and the yellow coil. The speedo worked and I got it to Fiat who have disconnected the vapour heater element. They tried to source a replacement pipe with the heating element. A website was found who make a replacement which isn’t a Fiat one but a copy. It will cost almost two hundred euros to buy. However that would just be buying a potential problem in another five or so years. I think I will go for the wait and see option given what I’ve read here. Thanks again.

Hi Hammie2

These heaters are only required if temperatures are so low that there is a risk of ice crystals forming from the water vapour in the crankcase ventilation system. Unless you are venturing to Scandinavia you shouldn't need the heater to be working. If you still decide you want a replacement, try Coastal Motorhomes.

The frustrating thing is that the heater element itself is all that needs changing and ought to be cheap, the hose is usually fine.

Having rebrowsed this thread, there seems to have been some confusion between the Oil Vapour Separator, and the Oil vapour Heater. In an attempt to clarify the situation, I am attaching a relevant page from an Iveco 2.8JTD manual. The comments at the bottom of the right hand column have been added by me.

Thanks I tried Coastal but no joy I’m now looking at a German site that I think copies Fiat obsolete parts. I am however wondering what the condition of the pipe is. The Fiat man says vapour is leaking onto an electrical component so that is a worry. The charge to find the fault is £642 😱 but he may have spent ages looking for it. I just wish Peter hadn’t been ill. Bad luck on my part but worse on his poor soul. Thank you so much for your input very valuable. I was going nuts on Friday night

Hi Hammie2,

Please read again the post #23 by @Anthony489 that you have quoted above. The significant part, with which I fully agree, is that about venturng into Scandanavia. Perhaps it should include the North of Scotland in winter etc, but the meaning is clear. You are unlikely to need the Oil Vapour heater in the UK, or similar climates. So if the heater is unplugged, and with the connector secured to prevent it causing any mechanical damage when dangling loose, you are unlikely to have any problems while you search for a replacement.

The statement by the Fiat man may be technically correct, in that erosion of the heater sheath may allow vapour into the heater. However when the heater is unplugged, that is not going to cause a problem.

Thanks I had come to that conclusion too and decided that I wouldn’t want to be driving 4T around in snow and ice since I haven’t skied much since my husband died. As a Scot I prefer to go in September no midges and no snow 🤣

hi I am still trying to source the part for my Motorhome I have waited for the German company to get it back in but that is not happening. The pipe seems to be leaking as my hands smell of light oil after driving the van for a few hours. There are many thirty year old Motorhomes on the road so I must be missing something significant here in relation to how they source parts or get them made for their vans? Any ideas?

I have finally managed to download the file at last and it is pipe no 5 in the Oil Vapour Recycling system that appears to be leaking. Are there companies who would copy this pipe for me? I am getting desperate as I have been told I shouldn't be driving it until fixed and I love my old van.

Hi

I don't think there is anything "magic" about the material used for breather hoses, as long as they are synthetic rubber to withstand the oil. There is also nothing overly critical in the length and shape. I suspect if you went to a local plastic/rubber pipe dealer they could fit you up with something of a suitable inside diameter. Maybe Diesel/Oil delivery hose which comes in a wide range of sizes ?

Alternatively, if you only have a small area of damage/split that needs sealing you could wrap it with self-amalgamating tape, possibly topped off with heatshrink sleeving.

Oh thank you so much for taking the time to reply again. I have been on every forum all day with the problem and in line with what you are saying I have been told to contact Pirtek who are half hour away so I am thrilled with the responses today. I will keep the old one unless it is completely shot and do what you say as having a temporary spare would have made this year much less stressful. Thanks again for the info. Hopefully the Neismann and Bischoff Forum will provide some info on my solar controller and batteries which will only leave the replacement of the bedroom hatch. They say it comes in threes! 🤣🤣

I am delighted as the light at the end of the tunnel seems to be showing

There looks to be a few candidates on ebay for the hose, but you'd need to check measurements. I would have thought as long as the pipe is designed/certified for vapour, the correct diameter and enough length to fit without stretching or dangling it would be OK.

All parts on this age motor will be generic ones, I think I would doubt integrity of an original hose (if it was available) due to the date of manufacture. Ours is a 2006 so original parts would have been hanging around for years.

I put in an ebay UK search with the words oil vapour recycling pipe ducato if you prefer not to use the link.

On the 2.8JTD, the drain pipe from the oil/vapour separator is difficult to see from above, but there seems to be a right angle bend as it connects to the sump. If tackling a replacement from below, then the starter motor obstructs access to the other end, and would probably have to be removed.

Thanks it has been a nightmare

If you have not already put the job in hand, please make sure that the oil leak is not elswhere. A small oil leak will spread a long way.

I had a small leak on my 2006 2.8JTD, and it got most of the way around the sump, without a noticeable drop in level. After changing the camshaft cover gasket, the leak has stopped

thank you for the reply. The Fiat man told me that the pipe was spraying oil onto the engine. To be honest I wasn’t very sure of him as the usual man who is very knowledgeable had just broken his leg and was off work. I tried to get Peter again this week but he was on holiday this time so I spoke to the man I wasn’t confident in. I have spoken to Pirtek and sent the photos and diagram. They say they haven’t done anything like that before at Guildford but they want to see the vehicle in case they could do the work. I have also spoken to the auto electrician about the solar system and he and the caravan engineer are calling me tomorrow evening. The auto electrician will do the bits and bobs after the solar system is fixed and checked. She is a lovely Motorhome and loads of people comment on her, I have had seven years without a glitch but this year several things need sorting. I think she is worth it so I hope I get there in the end. I really appreciate your input.

Well thanks again for your help. I finally located the pipe in Austria and they sent it over. Peter fitted it just before Christmas which was a big relief. Since then I’ve had the batteries and charger replaced as the charger gave up and ruined the batteries. Now the cam belt needs doing. Oh help! Well I’ve had the vehicle for 7 years and no problems. She has been saving them up for me 🤣🤣🤷‍♀️ Onwards and upwards
