Hi
Can any one tell me the correct procedure on how to change the gear box oil/top up, I am having difficulty in finding the location for topping the oil up.
Cheers

Hi
As there is no level plug to check the amount of oil in the gearbox the only way is to drain the oil, then refill with the correct amount of oil (fiat seem to say 2 litres) but I think most people put 2.7 litres in. There are 3 places to fill the gearbox from, the Speedo transducer hole, the breather hole (which is hard to find) & the reversing light switch which is located on top of the gearbox just near/under the engine mount.
The air cleaner housing & associated intake hoses have to be removed in order to gain access to the reversing light switch.
See Garys’ pictures of his 5th gear repair for the location of the reversing light switch – Pics 37 to 39

As I said the correct amount of oil – 2.7 litres has to measured before refilling the gearbox. The additional amount is to ensure that the external housed fifth gear has sufficient oil for lubrication as this seems to be a contributing factor in the fifth gear failures on some models.
There are also more posts on the forum regarding the gearbox & changing the oil etc, if you do a search.
Cheers

I advise the speedo transducer hole its easy to access for removal and refitting and easy to get the spout of the oil container to., give a good clean around it before removing so as not to knock mud and crud into the box.

Hello all,i decided to change the gear oil on my 2000 2.8tdi it drained no bother the hand book says 2L of oil and on the box there is a 13mm stud its about 30mm long and has a copper washer fitted the hole does take the filling tube [just]but to bring it to the level its over 3.1/2L of oil, when I drained the oil I opened this stud and the drain gushed out approx. 2L or just over.can anyone of you please advise,i have tried to get a manual on this ducato but no luck yet. Early boxes had a dip stick, The later boxes were drain and refill, I doubt the hole is the correct level for an indication.

There were several different boxes in the ducato ME5T ML5T MG5T MLUC MLGU so you will find different recommendations on oil quantity.

There were oil starvation issues with 5th gear in some early boxes so the fill was revised from 2l to 2.7l.

If yours is on the heavy chassis in 2000 the 2.8idtd box is I think MG5T and 2.7l fill.

From 2001 onwards the MLGU box was used and 2.7l is again the correct fill.

Make sure you use the correct GL spec as some of the early boxes had bronze syncro that are damaged by the GL5 additives.
