Help needed, I recently put 40 Lt of bio diesel in my 1.9 TD Ducato and it ran fine for about 2 weeks but now when I demand power all I get is a cloud of white smoke from the exhaust and find it wont run over 40 MPH. I put some Redex injector cleaner in with no improvement and now I'm about to change the diesel filter and wondered if it is a straight forward job(y) or not(n)

Hi,
If the 1.9 TD is the same as the Citroen engine fitted to their cars it is very simple.
To remove the filter, drain the filter using the valve at the bottom, remove the allan screw from the top lift off the top lift out the filter (be prepared for some spillage) and replace with a fresh one.

The only tricky bit is priming the fuel system. You should have a black priming bulb on the side of the engine which needs to be pumped to repressurise the fuel line, takes quite a lot of pumps!!

Not sure if this will cure your problems, sounds a little more serious.
Regards
Stewart

Thanks for the reply but I think it must be different as the filter is a canister one (like an oil filter) and just unscrews from below, also there is no priming bulb.

no problem .... just replace the filter and fill it with fuel before you mount it so you can start engine imediately .......:)

hi i have been running bio diesel in all my vehicles now for about 5 years. The problem sounds like bad fuel. Possibly glycerine building up in the filter then being burnt, this would cause a lot of white smoke and a loss of power. a fuel filter would cure this but the vehicle may need to be towed to start.

Don't be put off by bio diesel as they will run well, after a filter change or two. The problem could also be the crud that builds up in the bottom of the tank. Bd has solvent properties and will remove the dirt and put it through the filter.

Good luck. Marc.

Changed the filter a couple of days ago and after filling the new one with diesel before fitting it my van started straight away and ran great, guess I'll try another filling of BD (60:40 on recommendation from supplier) and see how she goes.
PS, will carry a spare filter just in case. gomorley
