I have a constant engine fault with a fiat ducato engine on a swift kontiki camper van. This is the problem:

Swift Kotiki losing power and missing like mad

 by "veasey" <[email protected]> Jul 2, 2004 at 05:36 AM

My father has a swift Kontiki that for the last year we have had constant
engine trouble. we think we have changed or checked just about everything
but it still does it. This is what happens.

whilst driving it starts to miss and loses power. this gets worse very
quickly till you have to stop altogether. Letting it tick over for a few
seconds will clear the problem for a while. Maybe a mile or a meter.
Theres no pattern. Hills are the worst. Sometimes just changing gear
clears it for a while. Also it can be as soon as you start a journey or
after 50 miles, again there is no pattern. There is sometimes back firing
but again not always.

Has anyone got any thought as we and 2 mechanics are stumped!!

Veasey, give me a minute, I remember reading about somebody with a maraea having the same problem - they might share the same engine.

Maybe this of help:

It refers to the 2.4TD, even if yours is different, it might help somewhat.

Check Live Wires From Habition, Make Sure They Are Not Rubbing On
Chassis, This Will Cause The Engin To Cut Off ; Or As I Found Out At 60mph To Die And Then Slow Down , Hope This Helps .kds.

Hi,
I have had the exact same problem and traced it to the throttle position sensor. This is the unit on the back of the throttle which is 'fly by wire' as there is no throttle cable. This is quite common and the was finally detected by a Fiat dealer who, without charge, plugged in a diagnostic computer. Cost £140 for parts and labour. You can sometimes remove the unit and clean the potentiometer with electrical cleaning fluid - NO not WD40 !
Good luck.

It would help if you would explain the problem, most of your post has come out as hieroglyphics! You don't say how old the van is either but it sounds to me like fuel starvation and has apparently, the symptoms of a blocked fuel filter. I suffered this in a Nissan many years ago where it would cruise ok but not go really fast then lose all power when more fuel is demanded for instance going up hills or accelerating. Changing gear gives it a brief rest from sucking in fuel. Check fuel filters espacially any in-line ones in the pipes underneath the van, the other possibility is a blocked pickup in the tank or dirt in there (ie rust).
