Hello, my first post here having just found the FIAT Forum. I'm already a member of briskoda.net being a similar forum for 'briskly driven Skodas'.

I have a problem with my '53reg Doblo 1.9JTD, with only 20,500 miles. The clutch has started slipping, only slightly so far, on full throttle at around 2,500 - 3,000 rpm in 2nd/3rd/4th gears. Nothing too dramatic so far BUT I'm concerned that it is happening with a low mileage. :(

My local FIAT dealer, who I get on very well with, has really just said sorry but that's life and its a gearbox out 6.5 hour job!

I've looked around to see if I can get an uprated clutch to minimise the chance of a repeat problem in another 20,000 miles (if I fit an OE clutch) but can't find one; however, a couple of posts here (talking about ECU remaps for Doblos) say the OE clutch is good and strong. (y)

Can anyone offer any help/advice? Thanks in advance.

Will be watching the replies with interest, Bunny's Bravo JTD has started slipping with only 25k on the clock. Granted its about 2/3 years older but similar mileage.

Sounds like a weakened release spring, as I can't imagine the friction material will be worn out.

I've thought the same on my 25,000 mile Doblo, usually when I'm loaded up and flooring it it happens but I found the problem - at least for me anyway! Keep your foot completely away from the clutch. You only have to even slightly slightly rest your foot by it and that's what did it for me. I tested it only a few weeks ago :) - the side of my foot was just touching the pedal whilst I had it on the small rest next to the pedal and it caused it to slip whilst overtaking on the motorway, move your foot away and it's ok, put it back and it slipped again! Obviously this problem was to do with me and the way I drive and yours could be different - unfortunately not covered under any warranty!

If it is just the Release Spring, will it still be a gearbox out job to change? If so then I may as well change the whole clutch!

For Ozzie: yes same symptoms, it last happened with 3 adults plus a bit of luggage, full throttle in 4th on an M-way slip road around 2,500-2,800 rpm. I'm always careful about not 'riding' the clutch but will be EXTRA careful from now on.

Glad I could at least give you a little bit of awareness to it :) I haven't had a problem since because I'm making a point of putting my foot on the floor now not even on the rest and only taking it up whilst changing gear etc.

Hope that it was just your foot ;)

I wonder if theres a weakness in a batch of clutches fiat were using on the doblos, made in late 2003 early 2004, on my recently sold 04 model, I used to get the feeling the clutch was slipping for the last 10 months I drove it up until the gearbox failed in sept 06, at that point I had the clutch replaced as well. After that it was completly different. The previous 02 model I had never suffered from clutch slip. I hope my new doblo coming in feb 07 will be better than the last one, and more like the 02 model I had.

Ozzie,

We all know the real problem here was you usual choice of footwear. (Photo for those new to Ozzie's 'eccentric' choice in clothing).

:D :D :D

Hmmm; my Dobbie is a November '03 so could be in the range for the suggested bad batch of clutches  If it is one of the bad batch, my dealer has already told me (from experience of some Punto clutches) that FIAT are VERY reluctant to admit to a problem (is any manufacturer?) and it will be extra difficult for me as I am out of the 3 year warranty.

I haven't yet had the chance to try my foot positioning 'off and away' from the clutch pedal, although I generally think it is ;) ought to be able to do so at the weekend.

I want to get to the bottom of this soon and really am smarting at the 6.5 hours labour, more than the cost of the parts; so want to be sure any work is really necessary. (y)

I'm sure the independant chap that fitted Mrs_G's new clutch did it in much less time than this, and only charged £30 per hour. Much less than a fiat dealer and I have confidence the job was actually done by him rather than passed to a trainee while I paid for a skilled technician.

Gordy 74 I have a 55 plate doblo 1.9jtd which I use as a taxi has just 29.000 miles on clock and clutch now slipping .
Reading a couple of qoutes about resting your foot on pedal but not applying pressure I have got to say that I am guilty of doing so but didnt think this would cause such problems.

Briefly tested mine out this morning on a moderate hill, 40mph in 3rd/4th with my foot DEFINITELY away from the clutch pedal and there was no slip. I then touched the clutch pedal ever so slightly, as if my foot was ready ready to press the pedal to change gear and there was slight but noticeable slip. (y)

I'm hoping therefore that this will be the cure and that there is nothing mechanically wrong with the clutch.

I hope to do a further test on the motorway in the next few days and will report back after.

Well I'm ten months and 4,000 miles on from when my clutch first started slipping.

Initially I thought it was perhaps my left foot resting on the clutch pedal, which I made sure I wasn't doing, but in recent months the clutch would just occaisionally slip (as described above).

Last week, my ECU warning light came on and my dealer diagnosed the 'turbo boost pressure sensor' as being at fault, performance did seem flat and thinking about it has been slightly down on power recently. My dealer fixed this and reported all OK but said, "oh bye the way, on road test your clutch was slipping, Sir!"

It must be that now the power output is back up to full health, the clutch can't take it. Checked this out myself and the clutch is definitely slipping at 2,500 - 3,000 rpm. Guess I ought to get it changed.

I spoke to my dealer today and one saving grace to the situation is that, with the advent of the Doblo 120bhp version, the clutch has been uprated and is backward compatible to other 1.9JTD variants.

Going ahead and getting it booked in for next week and once the job is done we will ask FIAT to look at the old clutch for a possible warranty claim.

hi ,
do you happened to have the part number for the uprated clutch ?

rdgs

Hi, sorry only just logged in and seen your post; I'll talk to my dealer tomorrow and see what info I can get. OK?

You have a Doblo in S'pore? Didn't know they went that far!

Got my new clutch fitted today; dealer thinks the release spring might have been weak, so we're seeing if FIAT might entertain a 'warranty claim' of some sort.

Anyway - Part Numbers; OEM clutch is 71722790 and new replacement 'uprated' clutch is 71784573. Hope that helps.

thanks for the info..

remembered that i have a copy of the ePPR

managed to get another piece of info

seems like the the old 71722790 was replaced after 6/2003
