General Tyre Time Again...

General Tyre Time Again...

A tyre dealer told me that some Doblo`s from new were supplied with "car" tyres rather than reinforced. That the Cargo`s standard 6 ply *95/93S grade were better and longer lasting on the other models.

Oilrag you're spot on (y) that's exactly how mine was except here Fiat Ireland only have 88's listed as the tyre for Doblo Cargos. My problem came to light when she failed the DOE on incorrect rear tyres for the axle weight. (n)
I don't know if you remember the old VW Bus, when they were loaded up the rear wheels tended to splay and wear out the inside of the rear tyres. That's exactly what happens to the Doblo when carrying any decent weight. I stopped one day and heard a hissing sound which I thought was a puncture, but alas the inside was down to the metal. Bloody dangerous I never noticed the inside as the outside was like new. :bang: Incidently my spare is a 95/93 Dunlop and guess what the tyre isn't brought into either UK or Ireland only Pirellis are. :D

Alfavan,
I can`t think of any other contemporary vehicle of the same weight, torque/power, that runs on such narrow tyres, and small wheels as the 2002 JTD Doblo.
Yes, I remember the VW bus.
Re The Doblo, I always thought one of its strengths is the simple cart sprung rear axle design.
IMHO,It was not just the 95/93S tyres that solved the wear problems, but also the higher pressures.
Here in Yorkshire you can get 95/93S tyres, but there seems to be little awareness of the difference.
The difference in improved wear, with the commercial range tyres, fitted to the Doblo was so huge that when our Diesel punto needed new tyres, I opted for Hankook * van* tyres rather than the original equipment " Energy saver" car tyres.
Again, these commercial vehicle tyres are proving that they will more than double the mileage obtained from the original tyres.

Ozzie,

I've been away.

I have decided that Doblos just eat tyres, however, getting the wheels properly balanced and tracked (Holborn) has made a real difference to me. Much better now.

Plus; you say you are getting new pads and discs for £90 odd. Where?

My dealer wants to charge me £280 odd for the privilage - which will be in about 5000 miles. My discs are lipped, so I need new ones, but £280.....

What's the trick?

Kwik-Fit is where I had mine done - I know the guy so had a bit of discount but even without it's way cheaper than Fiat! Also, it didn't use their normal "Unipart" stuff as they don't make their own for the Doblo so it was actually Ferrodo parts I think but for the same price as "Unipart".

My disc's only had a slight lip on them so I didn't think they needed doing but they were 1mm under the limit which is engraved in the rim of the disc. They only have to wear about 3mm before they go under their limit. Same on the pads, they didn't look too bad and braking was fine but these were over 1mm under the limit. After the new discs and pads a massive improvement... have had to adjust my braking style dramatically as I found I was rather un-smooth when it came to a stop, all sorted now though (y)

Oilrag, you mentioned the Hankook tyres. Do you have the model number of them?

So no more handbrake turns then ? Shame coz your were just getting the hang of combining a handbrake turn followed by a quick burn out.

PS. How are the tyres?

:worship: Oilrag

Well said. That's the first thing I said to my dealer after driving my new Doblo 200 yards. The tyres are like something off a 2CV6 not a 100 bhp beast.(y)

I'll keep an ear out for the Hankooks next tyre change which shouldn't be for ages, but by then I'll probably change the wheels up to 15's, maybe somebody will have written off a new Doblo. :D Anyway Hankooks kick ass I had them years ago on a R5 and they stuck to the road like glue. :D

Hehe! ;) they are fine thank you, and am having the tracking "double checked" for free this Friday again to make sure it's still at 0degrees! Hopefully this will solve my tyre wear problems! Will be digging out the depth guage though and keeping an eye on them! :)

Cheers Alfavan, I was never into ABS, but the 2002 Doblo JTD convinced me that I had to have it next time :)
And now i have it on a new Punto multijet van... I dont need it again..............

Doblo, Do you mean the tyres on the 1.9 D Punto?
These are Hankook RA08 165/70R14C 89/87R

Just need to point out.
The Hankooks are on a Punto
Pirelli Citynet 95/93S were on the Doblo
Its the Citynet commercials you need for the Doblo

Sorry about that, my fault for mentioning the Punto on the Doblo forum.:D

No, on the Doblo.

Just as a little update, went back for a Tracking "Double Check" the other day and it was perfect hadn't moved at all. It was quite a way out and they expected it to move but it didn't. They recommended that I go for a free check now at least twice a year but preferably every 3 months, just to keep an eye on things and that hopefully this might help with the tyre wear even though they were wearing evenly.

They are quite cheap, although http://www.mytyres.co.uk/start.htmlhttp://www.mytyres.co.uk I find is cheaper, plus they give you more info about the tyres. Black Circles don't give you weight and speed ratings of their tyres - no good if you have a Doblo then :p
Ozzie, I presume with mytyres you have to pay another garage to fit the tyres which could then make them more expensive than Kwik fit etc.

I Get 9.500 Out Of P3's Or Budgets Tyres Wear On Inside. Big Commom Problem With Dob's Tracking Is Spot On. Ho? Ho? According To Fiat It's An Acceptable Amount Of Wear. Nearly Every Taxi Driver In Bristol Will Tell You,
