Guys, had my 2006 cargo 1.9 multijet for over 3 months now done 5000 miles engine great but always noticed a high pitched diesel rattle  when cold. Completely disapears when reaches optimum temperature but sounds as if something rattling and picks up with the revs untill warm then vanishes.

I know this 8 valve unit sounds rattly but is this standard? or should I have it checked out van drives great all the time just sounds a bit weird.

Any advice would be appreiciated(y)

I get both a rattle and a quiet noise from the engine when starting up from cold, I notice it as I idle down my street to turn (only about 20 yards) and as I come to a stop to reverse to turn I hear it most here. I don't really hear it after that as I don't need to stop for traffic lights etc for a while plus I turn the music up once i'm out of the estate. All diesels will rattle when cold, tappets are also most audiable when cold, my Dad's transit sounds awful when it's really cold and he starts it, getting rattles here there and everywhere but nothing wrong and I know a few other Diesels in my street are the same!

Have it checked out if you want though for peace of mind :)

Thanks Ozzie,

May be noticeing it more now its alot colder got it end of May when had all hot weather. Will keep an eye out or take it down to my Quality independant garage who are great for a once over see wether its anything more than tappet noise. Completly goes once warm. Weird!

Do as my father (ex-mechanic) always tells me when I mention a noise to him... "just turn the bloody music up and you won't hear it :)"

Sounds like you don't have yours up loud enough ;)

Funny that, as usually music cranked right up have "Wolfmother" annoying the wife at the moment. But recently maybe its the Baby to be but been going through a more serene, thoughtful period even stumbled upon Radio 4 (eek)

So your right Music on full and b******s to rattles and squeeks after all it is a Doblo Van not Bentley Continental:D

Now we're talking the same language :D except for the radio 4 stuff :chin: maybe worth a visit to a Physciatrist ;) (watch me get in trouble for that :p)

I did say stumble:D soon to come to senses and regained composure only to then find some other more "mature" BBC channel.

I was stuck in a barron area somewhere on the M6 where nothing but Radio 3,4 or classical fm could be found so thats why wife is now fedup of Wolfmother and Muse etc as had triple plays:D

Hi...

just found this thread while searching my own problem with my Stilo JTD.

Basically I have the same problem. On a cold start the car really sounds very loud on idle. The noise is coming from the left-side of the bonnet and sounds in a way as if the idle speed is too low.
After 30mns or so of driving the noise disappears completely.

I was wondering Chris, if you can PM me on an update. Have you managed to find something wrong, or if it's nothing to worry about?

Cheers

Mike

my 2005 1.9 jtd

was a bit clattery when cold until it was angel tuned and its loads quieter and nothing like as rattly from cold!

mmmm i thought the mulitjets had a 16valve head?? or have i imagined that?? please feel free to enlighten me :p

if it is maybe its something to be looked at under warranty, new technology isnt always plain sailing!!

Hello,

What grade oil are you using in your engine? The cold weather at the moment can make it sound very tappety if you are using 10w40 or above. This is due to the viscosity of the oil decreasing as the temprature decreases.

How long has it been making the noise?

Also, as you say its coming from the left hand side of the engine bay, it could be the lower auxilery pully on its way out, as these too rattle, however, they tend not to go away when the engine warms up.

Hope that helps,
Alan

Hi

I've had the car 4 months, recently did an oil change to 10w to see if it helped (i'm not sure what was in it when I bought it) and 10w is pretty cheap, planning to go fully synth 5w at next service which is only 2.5 months away. Hopefully will sort this out as a few people have said the same as your good self there. Fingers crossed.

Hi,
Yep that s exactly what I was going to recommend. I own both a JTD and a multijet, and both of them run much better, quieter and smoother on 5w synthetic.

Good luck,
Alan

i have just serviced my 2005 doblo 1.9jtd today and opted for the synthetic 5w 30 oil been using it this afto and its worth the extra money seems quieter! i would def recommend this for a start!

Mike this is an old thread!!!

Firstly i took my van in as it had turned into a squeel from a rattle and sounded like one f the drive belts.Sure enough they changed said belts along with checking the tensioner pulley.

so it sounds as if your doblo has a different fault to mine .

Van has 20000 miles now and is the best vehicle ever owned I now use a shot of millers new cetane improver which helps with cold starting and diesel chatter.

Give it a shot!

C
