If I remove the ignition barrel can I still start the car by screwdriver etc.

Key is very worn and is becoming harder to turn, been using the jiggle method far too long. I need to replace the barrel or cut a new key but for now need to make sure I can remove the barrel.

Try using the spare key. Then get a new one cut asap.

The switch on the end of the lock is turned either by the key tip, or part of the barrel. If the barrel is removed, the switch will still be there, and can be turned with anything that fits the connection hole shape. Might be able to still use the key.

The key will need to be close, as the code chip still needs to be read. If you leave the key there, perhaps taped to the column, then anyone can take your vehicle.

With a lock barrel removed, any observant policeman will be suspicious, so carry proof that it is yours, or delays may be long.

Ok so after getting home i set about removing the barrel, key into mar etc.
Took barrel apart removed pins springs and reassembled.
Key turns car starts!
Although I can remove key whilst engine on, doesn't affect steering lock immobiliser.
I can now drive the car until my replacement arrives.
