Hi All been having starting problems on my 08 1.3 multijet.. takes a few turns and was getting the "Glowplug failure" light come on.. the bad staring was happening before so I changed the battery.changing the battery didn't make a huge difference, warning came on after changing the battery . The starting has improved by the day and the warning has not come back. Doesn't start as fast most of the diesels I have owned. Also there is usually a sooty smell directly after starting for a while.
Any advice please

Hi varesecrazy
thanks for your reply, hard to say how old the plugs are.. I have no tools at this point.. in Greece waiting for all my stuff to be sent over.. pandemic got in the way!
Car was bought with no history apart from the dealer says he changed the chain and serviced it.. so going on trust... there was a lot of confusion with the language etc...PX with a Toyota Corolla I'd bought from him previously which had full history
Any ideas on the sooty smell after start up?

Unfortunately the leads are a good fit on the plug heads.. so you cannot easily see the state of the plugs :(

The sooty smell is probably related to the extended cranking... whether its a glowplug.. or other issue

Does it start better once warmed up..??

Hi Charlie
no not much difference in starting once warmed up.. in fact the other day I drove down the road had to stop to pick up something and it wouldn't start.. I thought would give the Glowplug warning.. but no, gave it a second go and it fired up.. sooty smell turned up..

If you have diagnostic device, read the fuel rail pressure while cranking.

One that plugs into obd connector in car and reads what the ecu is seeing from sensors.

Multi ecu scan that runs on laptop or notebook is very popular with forum members.

The free software will get you started.
Plus a lead to connect to obd port.

Charlie knows more about how to set up multi ecu scan than me.

I use it and like it but it's a miracle I got it to work on my laptop but that's me rather than the software.

Happy to help Biggy,
There is a multi ecu scan website have a look there.

Plus start a new thread on "how do I start using multi ecu scan and what lead do I need" , loads of computer people will leap in who know what they are doing with computers.

Cheers Jack

Ps where in Greece are you?
