Evening,

so... I have had intermittent starting problems where I turn the engine on, check finishes, start engine and you get a long start, with starter working but engine doesn't fire. if you do this too long the lights can dim and clock resets (I've only done this once out of desperation...) and flashes. Wait and try again it can take a few tries then then engine finally fires up. Runs well, no warning lights, doesn't cut out.

Battery and glow plugs replaced last year (before I bought it but have receipt in car) which makes me suspect it's been an ongoing thing... I could be wrong but seller also had issues with the EGR valve which turned out to be error codes and turbo sensor so probably just got sick of it!

From reading this fine forum i understand possible issue with crank sensor, or possible issue with starter motor, or possible issue with damaged battery cable/earth

how would i tell between these three things, or what else could it be?

thank you in advance for any help (y)

Start with the earth first cheapest option . Jump lead from battery earth to good clean metal on bodywork . This has cured faults in the past for me . Good luck mate.

Thanks for the tip Woolfie, not solved my problem so must be something else electric...

Looking at battery and it's a pretty cheap 12v/58amp number. At just over a year old it would be pretty poor lifespan but you never know. Will need to give the connectors a bloody good clean just to be sure too.

Had a good listen again: When I turn the key I hear the fuel rail load so that's ok, but when turn ignition I can also hear a quiet solenoid click regularly from somewhere in the middle of the vehicle that I had never noticed before, maybe every ten seconds or so.

That give you more informed spannerists any more clues?

The last doblo I had had intermittent starting issue as you explain, turned out to be crank shaft sensor, £12 off Amazon(2018). A bit fiddly to fit be but doable.
