Hi to all,

I have a 2006 1.3 multijet wheel chair vehicle, and plan putting on a towbar with lights.

I was chatting to a mechanic yesterday and he said, take out a bulb, any bulb, and see

if a light comes up on the dash. If it does............its Canbus. If it doesn't, its not.

Is he corrector not. That is my question. Thanks for looking.

All cars since about 1995 have some form of can bus,

Can bus is a type of network that the car uses to communicate between modules. A bit like your home computer communicating with a network (home router) to get on the Internet.

People go on about “canbus” when it comes to lights, but in all honesty it has nothing to do with the canbus , basically the car’s body computer is monitoring to see if the lights are working or not, and not all lights are monitored in all cases.

With fitting a tow bar you’ll need to know if you New a tow bar relay to overcome the warning you’ll get on the dash regarding the lights, this is because fitting a tow bar cuts into the rear light wiring and if you fit a second bulb to the circuit the car will think the bulb is blown or faulty and show up a dash warning.

That’s the long answer.

The short answer is yes your doblo will 100% be “can bus” and will need a tow bar relay to keep all the lights working and the warning messages at bay. But this in all honesty isn’t a canbus thing. It’s a bulb monitoring thing.

Hi Andy RKett,
Thanks a million for your quick reply. Sorry for not getting in touch sooner but just got in.
I understand what you're saying about the system being a bulb monitoring check, and any additional items included on a circuit such as a bulb would be highlighted straight away.
My word terminology came from the following video clip.

I used the above video to wire a Fiat Panda 2007 Skydome 1.2 petrol, it was handy to know where the wiring loom was located and splice into. No relay was used and there was no issues,
no lights up the dash after the installation was completed.

The second video clip explains how to wire in the unit/relay to stop any lights popping up. Go to
7:10 seconds to start the canbus info....as he calls it.
I'll be using this installation method for the Doblo 2006.
