Due to new congestion charge regs. in London I am changing the engine in our '02 Doblo 1.9 JTD. (it's just done 100k miles nothing wrong wth it) The multijet 1.6 unit looks like the best choice for Co2 emissions, or maybe a 1.3. Can I fit a 2010 or later engine and can I switch from diesel to a petrol unit?

I won't be doing this myself but am up for buying the replacement engine of that keeps cost down. ( change of vehicle not an option)

Any advice appreciated

I doubt it as all the loom and everything would need changing.

Did you end up doing the change in the end? I’m led to believe to get it exempt you would have to have the vehicles emissions tested by TFL’s approved tester who will then pass the results on to TFL to have your vehicle details updated.

I read an article on someone who had two 80’s motorbikes tested (both unmodified) and the NOX emissions where well below the threshold. The tester passed the information on but months later TFL were still showing that they weren’t exempt so they aren’t quick to updated their database.

Seems like an awful lot of work to save a few pennies. Wouldn't a newer vehicle, within spec, be a better option?

Or, if you're set on an engine swap, why not go LPG (full conversion)?
