I think the high preasure fuel pump broke down . I got a recon and fitted it. It sounded like it wanted to start but no joy . I've tried turning over by hand , it gets neurly all the way but gets stuck. I assume it's hitting one valve. So therefore has slipped on the timing. Will a re-timing sort it??? Can anyone help??

If the timing belt has slipped then the valves could potentially have hit the piston crown if it hits TDC when the valve is open.
I had this scenario many years ago whilst doing 70mph southbound on the A1:eek:
The belt had slipped only 3 teeth but the result was every piston had hit every valve whilst open.
I had to remove the head & noted every crown had two lovely valve-shaped gouges & every valve stem had bent ever so slightly making removal a very 'interesting' job.

Quickest way to check would, I presume (as I did), be to remove the cover for the belt & turn the engine by hand until the marks on the cam sprocket are where they should be for fitting a new belt - usually #1 cylinder is at, or near, tdc. The mark on the sprocket should line up with the mark on the belt.
