I've just had a new EGR fitted on my '06 1.9 multijet and now it loses power on acceleration, and when moving off from a stand still, which can be awkward when trying to nip out on to a busy road.

I've owned the car for 12 years and never had this problem before. I only had the EGR changed as there was a fault showing which came up as EGR valve, although the car was running perfectly.

It also had a new fuel filter and brake light bulb during the service too.

The mechanic thought it was likely it was the brand of fuel filter and changed it for another brand but it's still the same.

He seems stumped by the fault.

Sometimes it bogs down really badly and almost stalls. If I back off the gas and try to accelerate again it will suddenly pick up.

I read the thread about the brake light switch but no reason was given for that to be the cause.

I thought that the start up sequence wasn't running it's normal course either, no airbag flashing warning, but I'm not sure as that seems back to normal now.

Has anyone come across this after fitting a new EGR valve?

Seems like the new egr valve may be faulty. When it boogs down does the exhaust emit some white smoke as well? If so that means the egr is recirculating too much exhaust back into the intake manifold causing incomplete combustion and will explain the lack of power.

i put new MAP sensor (tucked in by egr valve, only one bolt) on a 55 jtd last week. it had been having the intermittent loss of power issue for ages.... now its running great and no power loss at all...at the moment lol. Got a bocsh one off ebay....sensor was full of black crap(haven't got round to vacuum testing it yet).
I have 07 105 multijet( non of that DPF nonsense) which i've also changed the map sensor on, have tuning box and egr blank plate with 10mm hole, still shows the mil light so i might take blank plate off (got to be tree huggers nowadays haven't we)but its got much more torque.
Also check your air filter lid is secure as those plastic securing tabs are rubbish.

Thanks for your help guys.
I haven't seen any smoke when it's bogging down.
I'll check out that MAP sensor.
It starting running fine for 3 days in a row so I decided it was OK to take on the motorway.
Big mistake.
It was OK until I stopped at the services. As I was coming back on to the motorway the power suddenly disappeared and it wouldn't do more than about 40mph flat out.
No warning lights on the dash.
I trundled along the hard shoulder for a few hundred metres with the hazards on and it suddenly picked up so I was able to carry on.
It's been running fine for another couple of days since then but this fault needs sorting out.

Hi,

Not sure if this will help:

After fixing my EGR and clearing the error codes with Multiecuscan, the error code came back after a couple of short journeys. Cleared the code again, same thing happened, and again. Problem finally solved by doing a forced regeneration. All running OK since.

Cheers

Ron

OK thanks for the advice.
Mine has never shown any error codes since having a new EGR but the problem is still there.
It has become very intermittent now, only losing power once every few days, which is going to make it harder to find I fear.
:(

The 1.9 jtd after running great broke down the other day and had to be rescued(only time in four years).
On turning ignition, ran for a few seconds then stopped. Very hot weather.
It started and ran great again yesterday. No lights on dash.
So after doing a bit of googling........ after I've ate my cornflakes this morning I'm out in the sunny weather underneath it replacing the CRANK SENSOR.
Car has 157000 on it so have to expect things to wear out.

Don't rule out the new egr it may be faulty and periodically sticking open slightly .

i replaced the Crank sensor.remove torx bolt... don't try to lever out.....dislocate wrist, grab with pliers by the centre and twist out whilst praying to who ever you pray to to avoid brown pants. Anyway it came out, fitted new one and engine still stalled ggrrrr.
Ahhhah discovered a solenoid valve behind EGR, which has 2 vacuum pipes on it, one to the throttle valve. Called boost pressure switch, or throttle vacuum solenoid or whatever anyway it wasn't working (12V across the terminal solenoid not clicking and no air flow),so I soaked it in WD40 over night and working great. I refitted it and car is now fully operational again.

I ended up taking it back to the garage as the power loss got worse and the the "engine failure" light came back.
Turns out it's the DPF that's clogged up.
For some reason the faulty EGR was masking the symptoms of a clogged DPF and once the EGR was changed it showed up.
The computer said "89% blocked" so the garage ran a forced regeneration cycle but afterwards it still said 80% blocked,
but the fault has cleared and it's running fine now (y).
It's done nearly 120k miles so I might have to fork out for a new DPF soon :(.
Pricey.

Take a high pressure washer and hose down the dpf....it is metal based not ceramic based like normal petrol engines and is so strong that it requires a prybar and an acetylene torch to be gutted. Simply picking at it with a long screwdriver would barely nick it so it would be pressure washer safe. (I attached a picture of my guys taking out the secondary dpf but it was the same for the dpf that is near the turbine housing outlet). It would get rid of most of the soot and save u a bunch.
