Has all of the oil quality stuff been checked via the OBD port ?

I have a similar, or at least related, problem. I'm in a Chrysler Ypsilon, but it's a fiat500 in a skirt, so here I am.
I have had one and one only DPF cleaning cycle, with the warning light on the dash. Good news, because I now know what it feels like on DPF cycle. But the car goes through what feels like a DPF cycle regularly. Smoky, lumpy running, idle speed wanders, and fuel consumption rises rapidly. But crucially, no warning light on the dash, or text note to keep running until complete. I don't own a scanner tool, and I get depressed spending money; any ideas?
