Hi All,
Following a recent visit to the garage to investigate a leak in clutch hydraulics I have come away almost a £1000 lighter, but now with a second gear that grinds, if at all it want to engage.

The garage to sort the leak have had gearbox out replaced dual mass flywheel, clutch release bearing, slave cylinder, entire clutch and a leaking flexihose. Not bad for a £1000 some have said but it's returned to me two weeks later with a fault it never had.

When the garage manager had called to to tell me it was ready for collection, he did mention that the mechanic had noticed second grinding on a road test and added that it was nothing to do with the work I had had carried out........not sure why he said that as I never asked nor hinted that it was.

I have spoken to the garage again this morning, saying I am not happy as that problem never existed prior to van going in.

He just keeps saying it's nothing to do with them and that it is a gearbox strip down job.

Is it possible that something could have been damaged during the work I had done.

I feel I may have to take this further as garage seems to be messing me about.

This is not the only problem it returned with but they will sort others out but say they are not responsible for grinding box.

Many thanks in advance professional help required.

I would love to offer constructive advice, but I don't know enough about these to do so.

I did wonder if the gear linkage had become mis-adjusted with the gearbox having been removed, but having had a look at mine, there doesn't seem to be any adjustment (but I stand to be corrected here).

I can't understand why 2nd should show a problem with a clutch change.
Will the car go into 2nd easily at a standstill with the engine off? Does it grate with the engine on at a standstill?
If it's difficult at rest, I would still suggest a linkage adjustment issue, but TBH, I'm only guessing.

I would take this further. In this day and age it is simply not acceptable to return a vehicle with ANY faults - even minor ones that you say they are going to sort out.

Is this a Fiat Dealer?

Hi Mike
Thanks for your reply.
When engine running idle the gears engage smoothly with clutch down no grinding. When engine off gears all engage smoothly. On way back to garage this morning if I put clutch down in first, let revs die off 2nd engaged o.k. but then engine laboured to pick up again, not ideal but at least it never ground gear.
Coming back down the box this was not possible so I just have to coast through second and into frt as revs drop.

Yes they are fiat dealers. A ford branch in york but also fiat dealers at another branch they do have fiat mechanics there.

Any help appreciated thanks

Does sound like a synchromesh problem Johnny.

You're maybe a little too young to remember how to double de-clutch, but try, on the downshifts, to blip the throttle just as you engage 2nd gear - this may make it easier to engage, but obviously won't cure the problem.
