My 2007 1.9 multijet sx Cargo has covered 56k from new at low speed 15-20mph it makes a low eccentric gear drone ,the gears are no problem as it was new the noise is hidden by engine/road noise. Is this common what is it likely to be?

Probably nothing wrong and it will do that for another 150K miles.
Got to remember there's virtually zero soundproofing on the Cargos.
Once the bonnets closed it's a tin box with every noise amplified and then going straight through the bare bulkhead, through an echo chamber behind and under the dashboard and then into the cabin.
I stuffed wadding into all the spaces behind the dashboard in mine and while it's no limousine it made a big difference.
The one thing you could do (and probably should if it's not been done) is change the gearbox oil. Having fresh oil never hurt anything.

Hi,

Does the noise go away if you press the clutch pedal?

I there enough gearbox oil in it I wonder?

John.

Thanks for the info, my clutch release bearing was howling it must of not been packed properly from new so I had it replaced with a new plate at 40k I got the mechanic to refill with new oil + MolyslipG. The gear change is like silk and quiet this noise is apparent at low speed with the window open I wonder if it's a diff bearing or similar?

Is it a common weakness on the 1.9td gearboxes is there a final drive bearing which commonly fails perhaps?
