im aware that there is no haynes for the fiat, and ive been trawling the net for conflicting answers. but where can i find some sort of service guide, mainly for fluid spec i.e. coolant and lubrication.

planning an oil change ive bought fully synth 5w40.
my main concern is coolant, what type? the temp gauge averages 30 deg so i would like to flush and change the coolant first before going for thermostat and sensors.

30'C gotta be a stuck stat - or poor gauge / sender..does it ever pump HOT air..??:confused:

By the book, gearbox is 75W-80 synthetic - capacity is just under 2 Litres empty - filler is on the side towards the top of the box, drain plug underneath. Always open the filler first, but you knew that ;)
The bottom plug can be a barsteward. If you want to go the whole hog, take the end plate off and clean that out while the box is empty. It's collects every bit of crud going, and has probably never been cleaned out.

Spec for coolant is CUNA NC 956-16 - glycol based. Google should identify various makes.

Your engine oil is fine by the book (mines in German or I'd scan it for you)

If you don't know the service history, I'd be inclined to empty it and chuck some cheap 20/50 or whatever in it and run it for a few days, then change the oil and filter. really thorough would be change the filter with the cheap oil and then again with the nice stuff.
The same goes for the gearbox if you have a couple of litres of 20/50 and promise yourself you'll change it for 75W-80 in a couple of days, especially if you've dropped the endplate off and disturbed it.
 
PS: buy a REALLY good quality allen socket for the oil drain plug and expect to have to use a bar on a T piece to open it - even judicious blowtorchery may be needed. Have fun ;)
 
does it ever pump HOT air..??:confused:

the air is only ever warm, sometimes hot this was my gripe. does seem to be the thermostat it looks 'old' but comes at a price along with the sensors. going try a good bleed see if there is any air the coolant change, then stat a sensors.

engine is 1.9 jtd.

thanks sinny, one for the future concentrate on the basics first filters and fluids as parts do seem on the expensive side.

I'm not sure what you mean by the temp gauge averaging 30 degrees - do you mean, it's moved 30 degrees up from cold?

Before you worry too much, remember diesels don't produce as much heat as petrols, so they don't warm through as quickly. Mine (1.9JTD) can take ages to get to half way.

Rule of thumb, drive for half an hour - if your guage is reading anywhere where between a quarter and half and your top hose to the radiator is getting hot to touch, your thermostat is OK. In the summer, that's going to tend to increase.

By the way as this is a new motor to you, while you're underneath, you'll see a heavy earth cable coming down and attaching to the front of the block near the air cleaner. Yank it about, make sure it's sound and isn't (as mine was :p ) the cable just sitting in the cup of the connector - then take it off and clean it and remake the connection to the lump. This 5 minutes will save you all sorts of grief in the long run.
