Hi guys,

new forum menber here because im having some major issues with the fiat i just bought and hope you can help me.

i bought the van 2 months ago and it has had no problems up until yesterday.
yesterday i tried starting the van and the glow plug light was flashing and would not start, i tried it 4 more times and it reluctantly started ( very low idle revs, ~2000 revs when pedal at max, glow light was on and engine management light was on) as soon as the engine management light lit up, i lost power to the rear park sensors and radio.

i went to a local garage to check for faults and they found multiplpe errors but i cant remember any other than "dpf regeneration test failed". They reset the errors, the van worked fine, and said to take it on a drive. i drove for 30 miles and had no issues.

The following morning i had the same issues as before with the addition issue of no main headlight beam.

could someone give me some advice on what may be wrong and how to fix it please.

Thank you
Mike

Hi Mike, and welcome to FF,

are you familiar with the DPF stuff.? has it done regens o.k. until now..?

I suspect yours is basically an electrical power / earth issue,

have you had LOTS of rain lately..?check the scuttle drains are clean - no water backing up and getting into electrics,

where are you / the doblo based..?

getting the fault codes read - and attempting to clear them will only take 5 mins,
the DPF side may well need a change of setting - Multiecuscan - is great for this,

Thanks for your help varesecrazy. I'm near York. We only did the regeneration test once and it failed at 99% I was told.

Here's a quick update after speaking to the local fiat mechanic.

I had stupidly forgot to mention that I had installed a different kenwood stereo a few days earlier, and also replaced 2 headlight bulbs. That is apparently part of the issue.
He stated fiats are very tempramental to changes. And that when the engine is started, the computer does a check for certain things and didn't like the stereo as it wasn't an expected change (unsure how it knows) so showed an error. The same reason with the headlights. The mechanic advised that I should have disconnected the battery before changing them amd then the computer would have accepted the change.

He has now "reset" something and fitted the old stereo to see if it happens again.

I will post an update after the weekend as this seems to be a very odd reason for multiple faults.

Thanks again

Hi Mike,

The main reason for the potential problems is that the fiat system uses a canbus. It is not alone in this as a lot of cars do so now.

This system does not like unexpected changes such as stereo etc, as you have found out.

I had a tow bar fitted by a witter tow bar dealer, the biggest problem they had was getting the canbus system to accept it ( it was supposed to be plug and play......)

The main way of getting around this is by using the multiscan software as mentioned in this article, to do a proxy alignment ( in English - reset the computer and let it learn what's new / tell it what's new ).

Hopefully all will now be well, if not come back!

Ken
