Is there an easier way to get at the starter motor and alternator for removal?
My 05 1.9JTD is off to the scrapers so I thought I would remove a few ancillaries before it gets made into baked bean tins.
Starter motor: got two bolts off easy enough but the hidden third took some head scratching. Ended up removing the EGR and getting at it from the top
Alternator: getting at the top bolt was the issue here. In the end it was a matter of a curved spanner on the nut and mixing and matching sockets/short extensions to get the right length for the bolt.
All this with the car jacked up and the engine lowered in an attempt to get more access. What a pig of a job for something that should have been a lot easier. Whilst I was underneath it I did wonder if removing the drive shafts was the way to go. Found one bolt on the off side but it seem to be releasing anything so I left it. All this with the exhaust down pipe removed.
Might have a go at getting the high pressure fuel pump and injectors off as the motor was running good (apart from the timing belt end crank seal that was leaking - hence me throwing the towel in and getting rid).
