Hi there, Just about finished my pre mot work and see that the rear bump stop rubbers are badly worn and would like to replace them, looks like they unscrew by the body as there is no hex on the bolt and seem to be very tight, is there a captive nut under the carpet area ? any help would be appreciated, my new parts are on the way !

A cold chisel applied to the metal part at the top of the bump stop and hit with a hammer should get them moving - it did mine!

Thanks for the help, I tried this today but with no luck, I might have to look out my chain wrench and give that a try

I have got one missing, but its gone through two MOTs like that, the last MOT guy was going to fail it on that but I said it was like that last year and it passed so he let me off and it passed.

Hi,
We recently had the same problem, the boots were both gone completely, so the next job was to remove the round shape mount that the boot is attatched to. One came off lovely, but the second one was alittle tighter and then broke off. Took delivery of the new boots, and brought them into an tools supplier and he gave me a tap ( of same thread ) and proper size drill of 8.5mm. That's all he had, and set me back 20euros. Had to lower the rear suspension and undo the bottom shock connection. I had no choice because the drill wouldn't fit in otherwise. I drilled and tapped, and screwed on the new boot, applying alittle grease, before screwing on. I tapped the other side as well for good measure, and the two went on like a dream. Total time spent was 2 hours.
I hope this is of some help.
John.

Hi guys,

What to do if they are just spinning?

Looks like the bolt turns with but its not comming out. I turned it with a big “pipe wrench?”

Hi,
How did you free the bolt sheared bumpstop housing to remove the bumpstop?
I am trying to remove mine too, but the base plate is just spinning. It was very tight and was using a chain wrench to undo it but then felt it give, and now it is just spinning.
How do get it freed now?
Thanks

Can you SEE it spinning.. maybe pack it out.. with a screwdriver..or wedge

To stop it rotating

A good penetrating lubricant always helps ;)

Thanks for the tips. Ive got a garage looking at it next week so I'll pass them on too.
For anyone in the same boat in the future, I'll update this thread with progress and technique when i've got a successful outcome.

Just an update following on from my post on Nov 17th.
The garage was able to remove the old bumpstops without too much trouble.
They heated the nut first and then used mole-grips on the head of the 'bolt' (that had separated from the bumpstop base).
The second bumpstop nut was also heated and the bumpstop came off ok without shearing.
No idea how the heating of the nut was done. Perhaps a blowtorch.
All done quickly and cheaply for £30 (approx €35).
All happy now. :)

Hi folks, got this problem myself. Put a chain wrench on and it was very hard to turn but then just started turning really tight and not undoing.

Having viewed these online they appear to come with a bolt sticking out the top that screws into the body of the car.

Does this bolt have a head on it so I can get a socket to it? Not sure if its spinning in the car body or its broke free from the bump stop housing and the housing is spinning on the bolt.
