General Intermittent smoke/burning smell

Hi I have a 1.3 multijet family on a 08 plate 44000 miles on the clock.
the last 2 months the doblo will bellow out a bit of smoke every week it also smells like its burning. The oil level is also quite high. It seems to be running o.k though any ideas whats causing it?

First off, the oil level MUST be at or just below the max level. There is a very real danger of the oil being drawn into the inlet manifold and burned instead of the diesel...

Anyway, I suspect the billowing smoke could be the over filled oil being burned off, or more likely, it's the DPF doing it's regeneration thing.

Basically the DPF collects soot, then it builds to a level where it needs cleaned. This cleaning involves extra fuel being injected and burned at high temp in the Diesel Particulate Filter. It is heated to several hundred degree's and the soot gets burned off and ejected as exhaust smoke.
