Hi to all,
The girlfriend just bought a fiat doblo 1.2 petrol 2003 wheelchair vehicle, and its in beautiful condition like new.
She only got one key with the car (blue key). It works okay, and opens the doors and turns on the ignition and starts fine. But on some occasions it has a tendency to stick in the ignition barrel and turning the key to start the car can be troublesome. Although, if you move the steering wheel slightly, it allows you to turn on the ignition and then start the car as normal.
I'm just wondering if a new ignition barrel would be the answer new keys.
Which brings me to my query.
If I put in a new barrel and the new key, it will have to be programmed to match the vehicle.
I went to a locksmith yesterday and asked for his opinion and what I'll have to do to make everything work.
Key code from fiat would be my first step, he then could start from there armed with this info.
Was wondering, if I put the new barrel in and use the new key to turn on the ignition, although it will not start the car because its not programmed, could I use the original key (attatched to the steering column, or leave it on the keyring along with the new key) to start the car.
I asked the locksmith about this and he said that the range of the transponder was very limited, and it wouldn't work.
The key which came with the car, operates the doors and ignition switch mechanically, and does not have a remote device for opening the doors.
I've heard of some vehicles can still work keeping the original key within the vicinity of the ignition barrel.
Could this work for her fiat doblo?
Thanks for looking, if any body can help, it'll be brilliant.
John.

Hi there,
I am having a similar problem with ignition barrel, just bought a 2006 doblo cargo van and the key has to be wiggled to get it to turn in ignition - and will not turn back to park at all.
I also have some outer locks that are messing about. Two will only lock with key but not unlock (back of barrel broken on one.)
So have ordered a new set of 3 door barrels and ignition barrel whole assembly (and three handles coming separately)
Trouble is the new ignition barrel does not have the transponder aerial/ring - or the plug that the lead plugs into. So basically means if I want to get away with not replacing the ecu (£300) or having it modified to remove immobiliser (£150). I need to somehow remove the arial/ring from old ignition assembly along with the socket that powers it. And fix it somehow behind steering column along with the chip from old key! Hoping this will work.
As far as I know taping the old key under steering column or keeping it on the same bunch will work but if the new ignition lock you get does not have the ariel part then you may run into the same problem.

Hi Cazter 101,
Thanks a million for your reply.
I can see where you are coming from alright. It seems its not as straight forward as I thought. I seen this on ebay.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FIAT-DOBL...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item19ef067110

But the picture doesn't show the rear view of the barrel assembly, to see if you can connect the electrical connection for the ecu and aerial ring.
Looks like alot more investigation on my part, before I jump and buy anything. Just when I thought it would be a straight forward switch.
Nice to know though, that the original key might work all the same.
I see you have ordered a complete set of 3 door barrels and ignition barrel. Just wondering, is it like the ebay link above?
If it is, it would be a waste of time me buying one I suppose.
Thanks for your reply, it helps out great. Further studying is needed I think.

Hi Cazter101,
I just looked at the ebay link I sent you, and there is another pic showing the rear of barrel assembly. It looks like the connection for the plug you are talking about. It this it?
John.

Yes my ignition barrel is the same as the one you've seen from the same seller. With three door barrels as well.
It does have the connection on bottom for the ecu to plug Into, but not the one on the side for the ring ariel (which picks up chip inside coded transponder keys) will try to get some photos on here later when on laptop.
I am taking a wild guess that if I install this ignition without doing anything with the ring/ariel plug that the immobiliser will kick in as it cannot receive info without the ariel transmitting a signal back to it?
Gunno go ahead and once the original ignition is out (after trying to drill out the damn shear bolts!) see if there is anyway I can disassemble the ignition to leave just the ariel attached. If you understand what I mean!
Photos will follow....

Oh and yes I know about pushing the tab on outside of barrel to turn to park. I think my key is just worn too much. As I said it takes a lot of wiggling to get it to turn at all!

Hi Cazter101,
Sorry for not responding sooner............................Watching the british F1 at silverstone. I didn't know about the pickup signal to or from the ring/aerial plug. I was aware of it, but wasn't sure if it needed to be connected directly through the ignition barrel housing.
Just a thought here, if you disconnect the block at the rear of the existing barrel to the new barrel, and have your existing key in the vicinity of your new barrel, will it start your car there and then, before you take out your sheer bolts of your existing barrel................Which are a nightmare anytime.
Thanks for the info Cazter101, I'm smarter today, than I was yesterday on this issue.
John.
