Hi all, here are some symptoms, advice would be welcome.
I've got some issues with power and performance. First noticed more engine "whooshing" under acceleration at motorway speeds, then in due course the turbo power delivery become lumpy. Last week at town speeds and especially from cold I was getting engine noises of oscillating whoooah sounds up and down the scale.
On Friday, the power dropped to less than half, felt no turbo and shortly after I get white smoke when I rev the engine. So the engine still works but I suspect the turbo is damaged. Looking under the car I notice an oil leak falling from the oil cooler, I've traced that back to the feed pipe that goes to the turbo bearings. I reckon I should have fixed this leak before now!
So I've ordered a turbo repair kit off eBay but wonder how to remove the unit? It looks like 6 in accessible bolts, 3 up towards the exhaust manifold and 3 sideways into a large cylindrical "can" probably an exhaust catalytic converter that leads to the exhaust muffler pipework.
I am a competent mechanic but is there a best way to attack this job?
Thanks for advice from folk who have done it.
Paul
